Saul told his son Jonathan and all his servants to kill David. But Jonathan, Saul's son, was very fond of David,
so he warned him: "My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; find a hiding place and stay out of sight.
I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak to him about you. Whatever I find out, I will tell you.
So Jonathan spoke well of David to his father Saul. He said to him, "Let the king not sin against his servant David, for he has not sinned against you. What he has done has been of great benefit to you.
He took his life in his hands when he struck down the Philistine, and the LORD brought about a great victory for all Israel. You saw it, and you rejoiced. Why then would you sin against innocent blood by killing David without cause?"
Saul listened to Jonathan and swore, "As the LORD lives, he will not be put to death."
Then Jonathan called David and told him everything that had been said. He brought David to Saul, and David served him as before.
War broke out again. David went out to fight the Philistines and struck them such a heavy blow that they fled before him.
But an evil spirit from the LORD came over Saul as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand, while David was playing the lyre.
Saul tried to pin David to the wall with the spear, but David slipped away from him, and the spear drove into the wall. David fled and escaped that night.
Saul sent messengers to David's house to watch it and to kill him in the morning. But Michal, David's wife, warned him, "If you don't get away tonight, tomorrow you will be dead."
So Michal let David down through a window, and he ran away and escaped.
Then Michal took the household idol, laid it on the bed, put a quilt of goats' hair at its head, and covered it with a garment.
When Saul sent messengers to seize David, she said, "He is sick."
Saul sent the messengers back to see David, saying, "Bring him up to me in his bed so I can kill him."
But when the messengers came in, there was the household idol in the bed with the quilt of goats' hair at its head.
Saul said to Michal, "Why have you deceived me like this and let my enemy get away?" Michal answered, "He said to me, 'Let me go. Why should I kill you?'"
David fled and escaped. He came to Samuel at Ramah and told him everything Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to Naioth and stayed there.
Saul was told, "David is at Naioth in Ramah."
So Saul sent messengers to seize David. But when they saw the company of prophets prophesying, with Samuel standing there as their leader, the Spirit of God came upon Saul's messengers, and they also prophesied.
When Saul was told, he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. Saul sent messengers a third time, and they also prophesied.
Finally he went to Ramah himself. When he came to the great cistern at Secu, he asked, "Where are Samuel and David?" "At Naioth in Ramah," someone said.
So he went on toward Naioth in Ramah. But the Spirit of God came upon him too, and he walked along prophesying until he came to Naioth in Ramah.
He too stripped off his clothes and prophesied before Samuel, and he lay naked all that day and all that night. That is why people say, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"
