David left there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father's whole household heard of it, they went down to him there.

Everyone in distress, everyone in debt, everyone bitter in spirit gathered to him, and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him.

From there David went to Mizpeh in Moab and said to the king of Moab, "Please let my father and mother come and stay with you until I know what God will do for me."

So he left them with the king of Moab, and they stayed with him the whole time David was in the stronghold.

But the prophet Gad said to David, "Do not stay in the stronghold. Go to the land of Judah." So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.

Saul heard that David and the men with him had been discovered. Saul was sitting at Gibeah under the tamarisk tree on the height, spear in hand, with all his servants standing around him.

Saul said to the servants standing around him, "Listen now, men of Benjamin! Will the son of Jesse give all of you fields and vineyards? Will he make all of you commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds?

Yet all of you have conspired against me, and no one told me when my own son made a covenant with the son of Jesse. Not one of you is concerned for me or tells me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as he does today."

Then Doeg the Edomite, who was standing with Saul's servants, answered, "I saw the son of Jesse come to Nob, to Ahimelech son of Ahitub.

Ahimelech inquired of the LORD for him, gave him provisions, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine."

The king sent for Ahimelech the priest, son of Ahitub, and for his father's whole household, the priests at Nob, and they all came to the king.

Saul said, "Listen now, son of Ahitub." He answered, "Here I am, my lord."

Saul said to him, "Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse—giving him bread and a sword and inquiring of God for him, so that he could rise against me and lie in wait, as he does today?"

Ahimelech answered the king, "Who among all your servants is as trustworthy as David? He is the king's son-in-law, he obeys your every command, and he is honored in your house.

Is today the first time I have inquired of God for him? Far be it from me! Let the king not charge his servant or anyone in my father's household with anything, for your servant knew nothing of all this, small or great.

But the king said, "You shall surely die, Ahimelech—you and your father's whole household."

And the king ordered the guards standing beside him, "Turn and kill the priests of the LORD, because they too have sided with David. They knew he was fleeing and did not tell me." But the king's servants would not raise a hand to strike down the priests of the LORD.

Then the king said to Doeg, "You turn and strike down the priests." So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck them down. That day he killed eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.

He also put Nob, the town of the priests, to the sword—men and women, children and infants, oxen, donkeys, and sheep.

But one son of Ahimelech son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled to David.

Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the LORD.

Then David said to Abiathar, "That day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, I knew he would be sure to tell Saul. I am responsible for every life in your father's household.

Stay with me; do not be afraid. The one who seeks my life seeks yours as well. With me you will be safe."

People

Doeg the Edomite (דֹּאֵג הָאֲדֹמִי) was introduced in the previous chapter as Saul’s "chief shepherd" (21:8), but plays a central role in this chapter. He came from Edom, Israel’s neighboring people to the southeast. The fact that an Edomite held a trusted position at Saul’s court shows that foreigners could serve Israelite kings, yet his willingness to kill the LORD’s priests stands in sharp contrast to the refusal of the Israelite servants. His Edomite background may explain why he did not share the Israelites’ reverence for the priesthood.

Abiathar (אֶבְיָתָר), son of Ahimelech, is the sole survivor of the massacre at Nob. His flight to David marks the beginning of an important relationship in which Abiathar becomes David’s priest.

The prophet Gad (גָּד הַנָּבִיא) is mentioned here for the first time as David’s prophet. He instructs David to leave the stronghold and return to the land of Judah (v. 5).

The Cave of Adullam (מְעָרַת עֲדֻלָּם) is located in the lowlands of Judah (the Shephelah), about 20 km southwest of Jerusalem. The Hebrew expression "מַר־נֶפֶשׁ" (bitter in soul) describes people in deep despair. About 400 men gathered around David (v. 2).

The servants’ refusal to kill the priests demonstrates the deep reverence Israelites had for those who wore the "linen ephod" (אֵפוֹד בָּד). The ephod was a sacred priestly garment, and killing 85 priests who wore it was an unheard-of crime. Saul’s use of a foreigner to carry out this wicked act underscores how he had alienated himself from his own people and their religious values.
