Now the LORD said to Moses, "Come up to the LORD—you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of Israel's elders—and bow down at a distance.

Moses alone shall approach the LORD; the others shall not come near, and the people shall not come up with him."

Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD and all the ordinances, and with one voice all the people answered, "Everything the LORD has spoken we will do."

So Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD. Early the next morning he built an altar at the foot of the mountain, with twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel.

He sent young men of Israel, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed bulls as fellowship offerings to the LORD.

Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and the other half he threw against the altar.

Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it aloud to the people, and they said, "Everything the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will obey."

Moses took the blood, scattered it over the people, and said, "This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words."

Then Moses went up with Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of Israel's elders,

and they saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement of sapphire, clear as the sky itself.

But he did not raise his hand against the leaders of the Israelites; they beheld God, and they ate and drank.

The LORD said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain and stay there, and I will give you the stone tablets with the law and the commandments I have written for their instruction."

So Moses set out with Joshua his assistant, and Moses went up on the mountain of God.

He said to the elders, "Wait here for us until we come back to you. Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute can go to them."

When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it,

and the glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the LORD called to Moses from within the cloud.

To the eyes of the Israelites the glory of the LORD looked like a consuming fire on the mountaintop.

Moses entered the cloud as he went up the mountain, and he stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

Nadab and Abihu are Aaron's two eldest sons, who later die when they offer "strange fire" before the Lord (Leviticus 10). Joshua is referred to here as Moses' "servant" (מְשָׁרְתוֹ, mesharto, v. 13) – a title indicating a trusted assistant and apprentice, not a slave.
