In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the temple.
Above him stood seraphim, each with six wings: with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew.
And they called out to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory."
At the sound of the voice that called, the doorposts of the thresholds shook, and the house was filled with smoke.
Then I said, "Woe to me! I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips—and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!"
Then one of the seraphim flew to me, holding a glowing coal that he had taken from the altar with tongs.
He touched my mouth with it and said, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin is atoned for."
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here I am. Send me!"
And he said, "Go and say to this people: 'Hear, but never understand; look, but never perceive.'
Make the heart of this people dull, their ears heavy, and their eyes blind—so that they cannot see with their eyes, or hear with their ears, or understand with their hearts, and so turn and be healed.
Then I said, "How long, Lord?" And he answered, "Until the cities lie in ruins with no one living in them, the houses are empty of people, and the land is left a desolate waste;
The LORD will drive the people far away, and great will be the abandonment in the midst of the land.
And though a tenth remains in it, it too will be burned again—like a terebinth or an oak, which leaves a stump when it is felled. That stump is a holy seed."
