For the choirmaster. According to Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

My soul waits in silence for God alone; from him comes my salvation.

He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will never be badly shaken.

How long will you all assail a man, to break him down as though he were a leaning wall, a tottering fence?

They plot only to bring him down from his high place; they take pleasure in falsehood. With their mouths they bless, but inwardly they curse. Selah

Be silent before God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from him.

He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will not be shaken.

My salvation and my honor rest on God; my mighty rock, my refuge, is in God.

Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts before him. God is our refuge. Selah

Those of low estate are only a breath, those of high estate a lie; placed on the scales, they go up; together they are lighter than a breath.

Do not trust in extortion, or set vain hopes on stolen goods; if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

Once God has spoken, twice I have heard it: power belongs to God,

and to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love; for you repay each one according to what he has done.

The heading mentions Jeduthun (יְדוּתוּן), one of the three main leaders of temple music during the time of David and Solomon, along with Asaph and Heman (1 Chron 16:41–42; 25:1–6). Jeduthun was a Levite appointed to lead praise singing with harps and lyres. The phrase "to the choirmaster: according to Jeduthun" may indicate that the psalm was to be performed in the musical tradition established by Jeduthun, or by his descendants who continued this service. His name is connected to the root ידה (yadah, "to praise/thank") and also appears in the headings of Psalms 39 and 77.

The psalmist uses this image to show that people, regardless of social status, lack substance when weighed against God's standard.
