I will stand at my post and station myself on the rampart; I will watch to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give concerning my complaint.

Then the LORD answered me: "Write down the vision; inscribe it plainly on tablets, so that the one who reads it may run.

For the vision awaits its appointed time; it testifies of the end and does not lie. Though it lingers, wait for it, for it will surely come and will not delay.

Look at the proud one: his soul is not upright within him. But the righteous shall live by his faith.

Indeed, wine betrays him; he is an arrogant man who knows no rest. His appetite is as wide as the grave; like death he is never satisfied. He gathers all the nations to himself and sweeps up all the peoples for himself.

Will not all of them taunt him with mockery and riddles, saying: 'Woe to him who piles up what is not his own! How long will he load himself with debt?'

Will not your creditors suddenly rise up? Will not those who make you tremble awake? Then you will become their plunder.

Because you have plundered many nations, the rest of the peoples will plunder you—for the blood you shed and the violence you did to the land, to the city and all who live in it.

Woe to him who piles up unjust gain for his house, who sets his nest on high to escape the reach of harm!

You have plotted shame for your own house by cutting off many peoples; you have forfeited your own life.

For the stone will cry out from the wall, and the beam will answer it from the woodwork.

Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed and founds a town on injustice!

Is it not from the LORD of hosts that the peoples labor only for fire, that the nations exhaust themselves for nothing?

For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

Woe to him who makes his neighbor drink, who pours out his wrath until they are drunk, so that he can gaze at their naked bodies!

You will be filled with shame instead of glory. Now you drink and expose yourself! The cup of the LORD's right hand is coming around to you, and disgrace will cover your glory.

For the violence you did to Lebanon will overwhelm you, and the destruction of its beasts will terrify you—for the blood you shed and the violence you did to the land, to the city and all who live in it.

What good is an idol, carved by human hands? What use is a cast image, a teacher of lies? For its maker trusts in his own handiwork, yet all he makes are speechless idols.

Woe to him who says to a piece of wood, "Wake up!" and to lifeless stone, "Arise!" Can it teach? See, it is overlaid with gold and silver, but there is no breath in it.

But the LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.

Places

Lebanon (v. 17)

The reference to "violence against Lebanon" (חֲמַס לְבָנוֹן) reflects the Babylonians' massive logging of the famous cedar forests in the mountains of Lebanon. Babylonian kings, especially Nebuchadnezzar II, boasted in their inscriptions about bringing cedar trees from Lebanon for their building projects. Babylonian chronicles document how the empire ruthlessly exploited Lebanon's resources, leading to widespread environmental destruction. In ancient times, the cedar forests were considered sacred and invaluable, and their destruction symbolized imperial greed.

The Watchman Image (v. 1)

The prophet's description of "standing on my watchpost" (עַל־מִשְׁמַרְתִּי אֶעֱמֹדָה) uses imagery from military practice. Guards stood on city walls or watchtowers to scan for enemies or messengers. This image was used metaphorically of prophets who guarded Israel's spiritual security and waited for words from God.

Writing on Tablets (v. 2)

The command to write the vision "clearly on tablets" (וּבָאֵר עַל־הַלֻּחוֹת) reflects ancient practices of public announcements. Important messages were carved into clay tablets or stone and placed in public areas where people could read them. The phrase "so that the one who reads it may run" (לְמַעַן יָרוּץ קֹרֵא בוֹ) suggests either that the writing should be large and clear enough to be read quickly, or that the reader should be able to run off with the message.

The Woe Oracles (vv. 6, 9, 12, 15, 19)

Regardless of interpretation, it describes the burden the conqueror places upon himself by gathering others' wealth—a debt that must eventually be repaid.

Nebuchadnezzar's own inscriptions confirm the picture Habakkuk paints of Babylonian imperialism. In the Wadi Brisa inscription, the king boasts of his campaigns to Lebanon to cut down cedar trees and describes how he cleared roads through the mountains. This corresponds directly with the accusation in verse 17 about "violence against Lebanon." Babylonian administrative texts also reveal the extensive tribute system that drained conquered nations of resources, matching the accusations of greed and exploitation throughout the chapter.
