So I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your spiritual worship.

Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you can discern what God's will is — what is good and pleasing and perfect.

For by the grace given to me I say to every one of you: do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but think with sober judgment, according to the measure of faith God has assigned to each of you.

For just as in one body we have many parts, and not all the parts have the same function,

so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and each of us belongs to all the others.

We have different gifts according to the grace given to us. If it is prophecy, prophesy in proportion to your faith;

if it is service, serve; if it is teaching, teach;

if it is encouragement, encourage; if it is giving, give generously; if it is leading, lead diligently; if it is showing mercy, do it cheerfully.

Let love be genuine. Hate what is evil; hold fast to what is good.

Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Outdo one another in showing honor.

Never let your zeal grow slack; be fervent in spirit; serve the Lord.

Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer.

Share with the saints in their needs; pursue hospitality.

Bless those who persecute you; bless them and do not curse them.

Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.

Live in harmony with one another. Do not be arrogant, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own eyes.

Repay no one evil for evil. Give careful thought to what is honorable in the sight of everyone.

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Do not take revenge, dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath. For it is written: "Vengeance is mine; I will repay, says the Lord."

On the contrary: if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. For in doing this you will heap burning coals on his head.

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Key Concepts

Sacrificial Language and Worship

In verse 1, Paul uses the Greek words θυσία (thysia, "sacrifice") and λατρεία (latreia, "worship/service"). This language was deeply rooted in both Jewish temple practice and Greco-Roman sacrificial culture. Unlike the sacrifice of dead animals, Paul urges believers to present their bodies as a "living sacrifice" (θυσίαν ζῶσαν). The phrase λογικὴν λατρείαν ("reasonable/spiritual worship") employs a philosophical term (logikos) known from Stoic thought, where it described something in harmony with reason (logos). Paul thus redefines worship from external rituals to the consecration of one's entire life.

The Body as Metaphor

The image of the community as one body with many members (verses 4–5) was widespread in antiquity. The most famous parallel is Menenius Agrippa's fable about the belly and the limbs, which Livius records was used to persuade the plebeians not to break away from the patricians in Rome (494 BC). Paul applies this well-known metaphor but gives it a Christological foundation: "we are one body in Christ."

Spiritual Gifts (charismata)

The term χαρίσματα (charismata, verse 6) comes from χάρις (charis, "grace"). The list of gifts—prophecy, service (diakonia), teaching, exhortation, generosity, leadership, and mercy—reflects functions that were necessary in the early house churches in Rome, which lacked formal institutions and had to organize themselves around various ministries.

Hospitality as a Christian Duty

The exhortation to "practice hospitality" (τὴν φιλοξενίαν διώκοντες, verse 13) had great practical significance. Public inns throughout the Roman Empire had a poor reputation for immorality and danger. Christian travelers—missionaries, messengers, and refugees—depended on being welcomed into fellow believers' homes. Hospitality (philoxenia, literally "love of strangers") was thus a fundamental virtue that enabled the church's growth and networking.

Living Peaceably with All

The phrasing "live peaceably with all people, if possible, as far as it depends on you" (verse 18) reflects the vulnerable position of Christians in Rome. The congregation consisted of a mixture of Jews and Gentiles, and it had recently experienced the expulsion of Jews (including Jewish Christians) from Rome under Emperor Claudius (49 AD). The need to avoid conflict with both Roman authorities and neighbors was highly relevant.

Prohibition of Vengeance and "Heaping Burning Coals"

In verse 19, Paul quotes Deuteronomy 32:35 that vengeance belongs to the Lord, and in verse 20 he quotes Proverbs 25:21–22 about giving an enemy food and drink, thereby "heaping burning coals on his head." This final metaphor has been interpreted differently: either as a picture of burning shame leading to repentance, or as a reference to an Egyptian reconciliation rite in which one carried burning coals on the head as a sign of remorse. Regardless of interpretation, Paul radically breaks with the widespread Greco-Roman honor culture, where retribution for wrongs was expected and vengeance considered legitimate.
