Then I saw a beast rising out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads.
The beast I saw was like a leopard, but its feet were like a bear's and its mouth like a lion's. And the dragon gave it his power, his throne, and great authority.
One of its heads appeared to have been slain unto death, yet its fatal wound had been healed. And the whole earth was filled with wonder and followed the beast.
They worshiped the dragon, because he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?"
The beast was given a mouth that spoke great boasts and blasphemies, and it was given authority to act for forty-two months.
It opened its mouth to blaspheme God—to slander his name and his dwelling, that is, those who dwell in heaven.
It was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them, and it was given authority over every tribe and people and language and nation.
All who dwell on the earth will worship it—everyone whose name has not been written, from the foundation of the world, in the book of life belonging to the Lamb who was slain.[^1] [^1]: Or: in the book of life belonging to the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Whoever has an ear, let him hear.
If anyone is destined for captivity, into captivity he goes. If anyone is to be killed by the sword, by the sword he will be killed. Here is the endurance and the faith of the saints.
Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon.
It exercises all the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and it makes the earth and those who dwell in it worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed.
It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of everyone.
By the signs it was permitted to perform on behalf of the beast, it deceives those who dwell on the earth, telling them to make an image of the beast that had been wounded by the sword and yet lived.
It was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image could even speak and cause all who refused to worship it to be put to death.
It forces everyone—small and great, rich and poor, free and slave—to receive a mark on the right hand or on the forehead,
so that no one can buy or sell unless he bears the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name.
Here is wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. Its number is six hundred sixty-six.[^1] [^1]: Some manuscripts read six hundred sixteen.
