Then he showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb

down the middle of the city's street. On either side of the river stands the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

Nothing accursed will be there any longer. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will worship him.

They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.

Night will be no more. They will need no lamplight, no light of the sun, for the Lord God will shine upon them, and they will reign forever and ever.

Then he said to me: "These words are faithful and true. The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his angel to show his servants what must happen soon."

"See, I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book."

I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had shown them to me.

But he said to me: "Don't do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers the prophets and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God!"

Then he told me: "Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near.

Let the one who does wrong go on doing wrong; let the filthy remain filthy; let the righteous go on doing what is right; and let the holy remain holy."

"See, I am coming soon, and my reward is with me, to repay each one according to what he has done.

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city through its gates.

Outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

"I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the bright Morning Star."

The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let the one who hears say, "Come!" Let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life as a gift.

I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues written in this book.

And if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are written of in this book.

He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all.

John

In verse 8, the author identifies himself explicitly: "Κἀγὼ Ἰωάννης ὁ ἀκούων καὶ βλέπων ταῦτα" (And I, John, am the one who hears and sees these things). He falls down to worship the angel but is rebuked and told to worship God alone (vv. 8–9).

The Angel

The angel who has shown John the visions (vv. 8–9) refuses worship and calls himself "σύνδουλός" (fellow servant)—on the same level as the prophets and those who hold fast to the words of this book. This emphasizes that even heavenly messengers are not to be worshipped.

Jesus

In verse 16, Jesus speaks directly and identifies himself: "Ἐγὼ Ἰησοῦς" (I, Jesus). He confirms that he has sent his angel to testify to the churches and applies messianic titles to himself.

The Water of Life and the Tree of Life

The expression "ποταμὸν ὕδατος ζωῆς" (river of the water of life, v. 1) and "ξύλον ζωῆς" (tree of life, vv. 2, 14, 19) link this chapter directly back to the creation account in Genesis 2–3. In the ancient world, rivers were literally life-giving—civilizations such as Egypt and Mesopotamia depended entirely on their rivers. The image of a crystal-clear river flowing from God’s throne combines this with the temple tradition from Ezekiel 47, where water flows out from the temple and gives life to everything it touches. The tree that bears fruit twelve times a year—once each month—surpasses nature’s usual cycle and signals a new created order in which the leaves serve for "θεραπείαν τῶν ἐθνῶν" (the healing of the nations).

The expression "τὸ Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ὦ" (v. 13) uses the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet as a picture of totality and eternity. When Christ applies this to himself together with "ὁ πρῶτος καὶ ὁ ἔσχατος" (the first and the last), it is a direct echo of God’s self-designation in Isaiah 44:6, expressing full divine identity.

The Root and Offspring of David and the Bright Morning Star

The title "ἡ ῥίζα καὶ τὸ γένος Δαυίδ" (the root and offspring of David, v. 16) combines two perspectives: Christ is both the source of David’s lineage (the root) and a descendant of David (the offspring). "Ὁ ἀστὴρ ὁ λαμπρός, ὁ πρωϊνός" (the bright morning star) alludes to Balaam’s prophecy in Numbers 24:17 concerning a star from Jacob and was in Jewish tradition a messianic image. The morning star (Venus) was associated in antiquity with royal power and new hope, since it heralded the dawn.

Sealing versus Openness

In verse 10, John is told: "Μὴ σφραγίσῃς" (Do not seal up) the words of this prophecy. This stands in direct contrast to Daniel 12:4, where the prophet was instructed to seal his scroll because the time was far off. The difference marks an eschatological nearness—"ὁ καιρὸς γὰρ ἐγγύς ἐστιν" (for the time is near). Sealing documents was a common practice in antiquity, both for preservation and to keep the contents secret until the proper time.

The Warning Against Altering the Text

Verses 18–19 contain a stern warning against adding to or taking away from the words of this book. Such colophons (concluding warnings) were common in ancient texts, both in legal documents and religious writings. We find similar formulations in Deuteronomy 4:2 and in ancient Near Eastern law codes. The purpose was to protect the integrity of the text against changes by copyists and to underscore its authority.

The Bride and the Spirit’s Invitation

The liturgical cry "Ἔρχου" (Come!) in verse 17 likely reflects early Christian worship practice. The combination of the Spirit and the bride together calling for the coming of the bridegroom mirrors the early church’s "Maranatha" prayer (1 Corinthians 16:22)—an Aramaic expression meaning "Our Lord, come!" This shows that Revelation was intended to be read in the congregation’s assembly.
