Look, I am sending my messenger, and he will clear the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord whom you are seeking will come to his temple, and the messenger of the covenant whom you desire—look, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.

But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire, like a launderer's soap.

He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, so that they may bring offerings to the LORD in righteousness.

Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD, as in the days of old, as in years long past.

I will come near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against sorcerers and adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who defraud the hired worker of his wages, who oppress the widow and the orphan, who push aside the foreigner and do not fear me, says the LORD of hosts.

For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, children of Jacob, are not consumed.

Ever since the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. But you ask, "How are we to return?"

Can a man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you ask, "How have we robbed you?" In the tithes and the offerings.

You are under a curse—the whole nation of you—because you are robbing me.

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the LORD of hosts, and see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour out on you a blessing beyond measure.

I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruit of your soil, and the vine in your field will not fail to bear, says the LORD of hosts.

Then all the nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight, says the LORD of hosts.

Your words against me have been harsh, says the LORD. Yet you ask, "What have we said against you?"

You have said, "It is pointless to serve God. What do we gain by keeping his charge and walking about in mourning before the LORD of hosts?

"So now we call the arrogant blessed. Those who do evil prosper; they put God to the test and get away with it."

Then those who feared the LORD spoke with one another, and the LORD listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written before him about those who fear the LORD and treasure his name.

They will be mine, says the LORD of hosts, my treasured possession on the day when I act. I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him.

Then once again you will see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between the one who serves God and the one who does not serve him.

For look, the day is coming, burning like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them ablaze, says the LORD of hosts, leaving them neither root nor branch.

But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings, and you will go out leaping like calves released from the stall.

You will trample the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act, says the LORD of hosts.

Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and judgments I gave him at Horeb for all Israel.

Look, I am sending you Elijah the prophet before the great and dreadful day of the LORD comes.

He will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers; otherwise I will come and strike the land with utter destruction.

People

The sons of Levi (v. 3) refers to the Levitical priestly class responsible for temple service. During the Persian period, the Levites were in charge of temple duties. The cleansing of "the sons of Levi" implies a restoration of pure worship.

Elijah the prophet (v. 23) was one of Israel's most prominent prophets from the 9th century B.C.E. His sudden being taken up to heaven (2 Kings 2:11) created expectations of his return. In intertestamental times and later Jewish tradition, the expectation of Elijah became central, and at the Passover meal a cup is still set out for him.

Places

Horeb (v. 22) is another name for Mount Sinai, where Moses received the law. By mentioning Horeb, Malachi links his message back to the origin of the covenant and emphasizes continuity between the requirements of the Mosaic Law and the prophet's exhortations. The place represents the foundational meeting between God and Israel.

Events and Customs

Tithes and offerings (vv. 8–10) were a central obligation in Israel's covenant relationship with God. The tithe (Hebrew: ma'aser) consisted of one-tenth of the harvest and was to be brought to the temple. "The storehouse" (beit ha'otsar) was the temple's storage building where food was kept for the priests' support and for the poor. During the Persian period, economic difficulties were widespread, and many failed to give tithes, which severely affected temple operations.

Sorcery and adultery (v. 5) are mentioned among the sins God will judge. In the Persian period, there was influence from surrounding cultures with widespread use of magic and fertility rituals.
