Remember, LORD, what has happened to us; look, and see our disgrace.

Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners.

We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are like widows.

We must pay silver for the water we drink; our own wood comes to us at a price.

Our pursuers are at our necks; we are worn out, and given no rest.

We held out our hand to Egypt, and to Assyria, to get enough bread.

Our fathers sinned and are no more, and we bear the weight of their guilt.

Slaves rule over us, and no one frees us from their hand.

We risk our lives to get our bread, because of the sword in the wilderness.

Our skin is hot as an oven from the burning heat of hunger.

Women are raped in Zion, virgins in the cities of Judah.

Princes are hanged by their hands; the elders are shown no respect.

Young men are made to grind at the mill, and boys stagger under loads of wood.

The elders have left the gate, the young men their music.

The joy of our heart has ceased; our dancing has turned to mourning.

The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned!

Because of this our heart is sick; because of these things our eyes have grown dim:

because Mount Zion lies desolate, and foxes prowl over it.

But you, LORD, reign forever; your throne endures from generation to generation.

Why do you forget us forever, forsake us for so long a time?

Restore us to yourself, LORD, that we may return; renew our days as of old—

unless you have utterly rejected us and are angry with us beyond measure.
