You are righteous, LORD, whenever I bring a case before you; yet I would argue my cause with you. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all the treacherous live at ease?
You planted them, and they took root; they grow and bear fruit. You are near in their mouths but far from their hearts.
But you know me, LORD; you see me and test my heart toward you. Drag them off like sheep for the slaughter, set them apart for the day of killing.
How long will the land mourn and the grass of every field wither? Because of the evil of those who live in it the animals and birds are swept away, for the people say, "He will not see what becomes of us."
If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how will you compete with horses? If you feel safe in a land at peace, what will you do in the thickets of the Jordan?
Even your brothers, your own father's house, even they have betrayed you; even they have raised the hue and cry behind you. Do not trust them, though they speak kindly to you.
I have abandoned my house, forsaken my inheritance; I have handed the beloved of my soul into the grip of her enemies.
My inheritance has become to me like a lion in the forest; she roars against me — therefore I hate her.
Is my inheritance a speckled bird of prey to me, with birds of prey circling all around her? Go, gather every wild beast; bring them to devour.
Many shepherds have ruined my vineyard and trampled my portion; they have turned the field I delighted in into a desolate wasteland.
They have made it a wasteland; desolate, it mourns before me. The whole land is laid waste, and no one takes it to heart.
Over all the bare heights of the wilderness the destroyers have come, for the sword of the LORD devours from one end of the land to the other; no one has peace.
They have sown wheat and reaped thorns; they have worn themselves out for nothing. Be ashamed of your harvests, because of the burning anger of the LORD.
This is what the LORD says concerning all my evil neighbors who lay hands on the inheritance I gave my people Israel to possess: I am about to uproot them from their land, and I will uproot the house of Judah from among them.
But after I have uprooted them, I will again have compassion on them and bring them back, each to his inheritance and each to his land.
And if they truly learn the ways of my people, swearing by my name, "As the LORD lives," just as they taught my people to swear by Baal, then they will be built up in the midst of my people.
But if any nation will not listen, I will uproot it completely and destroy it, declares the LORD.
