The word of the LORD that came to Hosea son of Beeri in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam son of Joash, king of Israel.

When the LORD first spoke through Hosea, the LORD said to him: "Go, take for yourself a wife of prostitution and children of prostitution, for the land commits great prostitution by turning away from the LORD."

So he went and took Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.

And the LORD said to him, "Name him Jezreel, for in a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood shed at Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel.

On that day I will break Israel's bow in the Valley of Jezreel."

She conceived again and bore a daughter. And the LORD said to him, "Name her No Mercy, for I will no longer show mercy to the house of Israel; I will certainly not forgive them.[^1] [^1]: Or "that I should in any way forgive them"; the Hebrew clause is difficult and has also been understood as "I will utterly take them away."

But I will show mercy to the house of Judah, and I will save them by the LORD their God. I will not save them by bow or sword or battle, by horses or horsemen."

After she had weaned No Mercy, she conceived and bore a son.

And the LORD said, "Name him Not My People,[^1] for you are not my people, and I will not be your God.[^2] [^1]: Hebrew Lo-Ammi. [^2]: Hebrew "and I will not be yours"; the wording echoes the divine name revealed in Exodus 3:14.

People

Hosea ben Beeri is the prophet who receives God’s word. The name הוֹשֵׁעַ (Hoshea) means "salvation" or "he saves"—the same root name as Joshua and Jesus. His father’s name, Beeri (בְּאֵרִי), may mean "my well."

Gomer bat Diblaim is the woman Hosea is commanded to marry (v. 3). The name Gomer may be linked to the Hebrew verb meaning "to complete" or "to finish." Diblaim could mean "two fig cakes"—some scholars view this as a symbolic name, but it may equally well be an ordinary personal name. That she is called אֵשֶׁת זְנוּנִים (eshet zenunim, "a wife of whoredoms") has been debated: Was she already a prostitute, or does this describe her future behavior? The text allows for both interpretations.

Jeroboam II ben Joash is mentioned in verse 1 as the reigning king of Israel when Hosea received his call. He belonged to the dynasty of Jehu, which is directly relevant to the judgment announced in verse 4.
