A miktam of David. Keep me safe, O God, for in you I take refuge.

I say to the LORD, "You are my Lord; apart from you I have nothing good."

As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.

Those who run after another god multiply their sorrows; I will not pour out their drink offerings of blood, nor take their names upon my lips.

The LORD is my portion and my cup; you hold my lot secure.

The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a beautiful inheritance.

I will bless the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my inmost being instructs me.

I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices; my body also rests secure.

For you will not abandon my soul to the grave, nor let your faithful one see decay.

You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy, at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Miktam (מִכְתָּם): The heading uses this rare term, which appears in six psalms (16; 56–60). The exact meaning of the word is uncertain. Some scholars connect it to the Akkadian katāmu ("to cover") and interpret it as a prayer for protection. Others suggest a link to gold (ketem), possibly indicating a valuable or "golden" psalm. The Septuagint translates it with stēlographia, which may imply an inscription on a stone tablet.

The Lord as "my allotted portion and my cup" (מְנָת־חֶלְקִי וְכוֹסִי): Verse 5 employs imagery from the land distribution in Israel. When the tribes received their territories, the Levites were given no geographic inheritance—the Lord himself was their inheritance (Numbers 18:20; Deuteronomy 10:9). The "cup" may refer to destiny determined by casting lots, or to the cup of blessing at meals and covenant ceremonies.

Sheol (שְׁאוֹל) and "the pit" (שָֽׁחַת): Verse 10 mentions these two terms for the realm of the dead. Sheol was the Israelite concept of the dwelling place of the dead—a shadowy, silent place beneath the earth. The word shachat can mean both "pit" and "corruption/decay." This duality became significant in later messianic interpretation.

Events and Customs

Verse 4 describes religious practices from which the psalmist distances himself: drink offerings of blood and invoking the names of other gods. In Canaanite religion, blood sacrifices and drink offerings to gods such as Baal were common practice. Israelite law strictly forbade consuming blood (Leviticus 17:10–14), and drink offerings were to be made with wine, not blood. The psalmist’s rejection marks a sharp boundary between Yahwistic faith and surrounding cultures.

Verse 7 states that the "kidneys" (כִלְיוֹת) instruct during the night. In Old Testament anthropology, the kidneys were regarded as the seat of deep emotions, conscience, and inner wisdom—much like what we today refer to as the "heart." Nighttime instruction refers to quiet reflection or dreams as a source of divine guidance.

Chapter-Specific Insights

This psalm’s messianic interpretation has early Jewish and Christian roots. In Acts 2:25–28, Peter quotes verses 8–11 in his Pentecost sermon as prophecy concerning Jesus’ resurrection, arguing that David could not have been speaking of himself since he actually died and was buried. Paul uses the same argumentation in Acts 13:35–37. This interpretation assumes that the phrase "not see decay" points beyond the psalmist’s own experience to a future resurrection. The Qumran texts show interest in eschatological interpretations of the Psalms, although Psalm 16 is not preserved in its entirety among the Dead Sea Scrolls.
