You are the children of the LORD your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave the front of your heads for the dead,

for you are a people holy to the LORD your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the LORD has chosen you to be his treasured people.

You must not eat anything detestable.

These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat,

the deer, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope, and the mountain sheep.

You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof, split in two, and that chews the cud.

But these you must not eat, though they chew the cud or have a divided hoof: the camel, the hare, and the rock badger. They chew the cud but do not have divided hooves; they are unclean for you.

The pig, too, is unclean for you, because it has a divided hoof but does not chew the cud. You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses.

Of all that lives in the water you may eat this: whatever has fins and scales you may eat.

But whatever has no fins and scales you must not eat; it is unclean for you.

You may eat any clean bird.

But these you must not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture,

the buzzard, the falcon, any kind of kite,

any kind of raven,

the ostrich, the nighthawk, the sea gull, any kind of hawk,

the little owl, the great owl, the white owl,

the pelican, the carrion vulture, the cormorant,

the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat.

All winged insects that swarm are unclean for you; do not eat them.

You may eat any clean winged creature.

Do not eat anything you find already dead. You may give it to the foreigner residing in your towns, and he may eat it, or you may sell it to an outsider. But you are a people holy to the LORD your God. Do not cook a young goat in its mother's milk.

Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year.

Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine, and oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the LORD your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always.

But if the place the LORD your God chooses to put his Name is too far away, and the journey is too great for you to carry your tithe—because the LORD your God has blessed you—

then exchange it for silver, take the silver in your hand, and go to the place the LORD your God chooses.

Use the silver to buy whatever you desire: cattle, sheep, wine, strong drink—whatever you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice.

And do not neglect the Levite living in your towns, for he has no portion or inheritance of his own among you.

At the end of every three years, bring out all the tithe of that year's produce and store it in your towns,

so that the Levite, who has no portion or inheritance among you, and the foreigner, the orphan, and the widow who live in your towns may come and eat their fill. Then the LORD your God will bless you in all the work of your hands that you undertake.

Mourning Rituals (v. 1)

The prohibition against cutting oneself (תִתְגֹּדְדוּ, titgodedu) and making bald patches between the eyes for the dead reflects widespread Canaanite and Phoenician mourning practices. Archaeological finds and texts from Ugarit describe how priests and worshippers cut themselves in religious rituals, especially in the Baal cult (cf. 1 Kings 18:28). Making bald patches between the eyes (קָרְחָה, qorḥa) was a common way to express grief throughout the ancient Near East. These prohibitions marked a clear boundary between Israelite practice and pagan death cults, where such actions could be linked to ancestor worship or attempts to communicate with the dead.

Clean and Unclean Animals (vv. 3–20)

The food laws in this chapter have parallels in Leviticus 11 but are adapted to the context of repeated instruction before entering the land. The classification of animals as clean or unclean was not unique to Israel—several cultures in the Near East had similar distinctions. What was distinctive was the theological basis: holiness and election (v. 2). The pig (v. 8) was especially significant in Canaanite and Mesopotamian cults, where pig sacrifices were common. The Prohibition Against Boiling a Kid in Its Mother's Milk (v. 21b)

This commandment is repeated three times in the books of Moses (Exodus 23:19; 34:26). Ugaritic texts have been interpreted as evidence that this was a Canaanite cultic practice, although this interpretation is debated among scholars. Regardless of its background, the prohibition establishes a principle of separating life (milk as nourishment) from death (slaughter), and marks respect for the natural relationships God has created.

The Tithe System (vv. 22–29)

The chapter describes an annual tithe to be eaten at the sanctuary (vv. 22–27) and a third-year tithe for local poor people (vv. 28–29). This differs from the tithe for the Levites in Numbers 18. The practical arrangement of exchanging the tithe for silver when traveling long distances to the sanctuary (vv. 24–26) shows an advanced system for transferring value, even though coins were not in common use until Persian times.
