The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar.
At that time the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined in the courtyard of the guard in the palace of the king of Judah.
Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up there, saying, "Why do you prophesy, 'This is what the LORD says: I am about to hand this city over to the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.
"'Zedekiah king of Judah will not escape the hands of the Chaldeans, but will surely be handed over to the king of Babylon. He will speak with him face to face and see him with his own eyes.
He will take Zedekiah to Babylon, and there he will remain until I deal with him, declares the LORD. Though you fight against the Chaldeans, you will not succeed.'"
Jeremiah said: The word of the LORD came to me:
Hanamel son of Shallum your uncle is coming to you to say, "Buy my field at Anathoth, for you have the right of redemption to buy it."
Then, just as the LORD had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and said, "Buy my field at Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for you have the right of inheritance and the right of redemption. Buy it for yourself." Then I knew this was the word of the LORD.
So I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out the silver for him—seventeen shekels of silver.
I signed the deed and sealed it, called in witnesses, and weighed out the silver on the scales.
Then I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, and the open copy—
and I gave the deed to Baruch son of Neriah, son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel, of the witnesses who had signed the deed, and of all the Judeans sitting in the courtyard of the guard.
In their presence I gave Baruch these instructions:
"This is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: Take these documents—both the sealed deed of purchase and the open copy—and put them in a clay jar so that they will last a long time.
For this is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: Houses, fields, and vineyards will again be bought in this land."
After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch son of Neriah, I prayed to the LORD:
"Ah, Lord GOD! You made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.
You show steadfast love to thousands, but you bring the guilt of the fathers into the laps of their children after them. O great and mighty God, whose name is the LORD of hosts,
great in counsel and mighty in deed: your eyes are open to all the ways of the children of men, to reward each one according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds.
You performed signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, and you have continued them to this day, both in Israel and among all mankind, and you have made for yourself a name that endures to this day.
You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, with a mighty hand and outstretched arm, and with great terror.
You gave them this land, which you had sworn to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey.
They came in and took possession of it, but they did not obey your voice or walk in your law. They did nothing of all you commanded them to do, and so you brought all this disaster upon them.
See how the siege ramps have reached the city to take it! Because of the sword, famine, and plague, the city is being handed over to the Chaldeans who are attacking it. What you said has happened, and now you see it.
And yet, Lord GOD, you said to me, 'Buy the field with silver and call in witnesses'—though the city is being handed over to the Chaldeans."
Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
"See, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?
Therefore this is what the LORD says: I am about to hand this city over to the Chaldeans and to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will capture it.
The Chaldeans who are attacking this city will come in, set it on fire, and burn it down, along with the houses where the people burned incense on the roofs to Baal and poured out drink offerings to other gods, provoking me to anger.
From their youth the people of Israel and the people of Judah have done nothing but evil in my sight; indeed, the people of Israel have done nothing but provoke me by the work of their hands, declares the LORD.
This city has so stirred my anger and wrath, from the day it was built until now, that I must remove it from my sight—
because of all the evil the people of Israel and Judah have done to provoke me: they, their kings and officials, their priests and prophets, the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
They turned their backs to me and not their faces; though I taught them again and again, they would not listen or accept correction.
They set up their detestable idols in the house that bears my name, to defile it.
They built high places to Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to sacrifice their sons and daughters to Molech—something I never commanded, something that never entered my mind—committing this abomination and leading Judah into sin.
Now therefore, this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says about this city of which you say, 'It has been handed over to the king of Babylon by sword, famine, and plague':
I will surely gather them from all the lands where I banished them in my fierce anger and great wrath. I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety.
They will be my people, and I will be their God.
I will give them one heart and one way, so that they will always fear me, for their own good and the good of their children after them.
I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never turn away from doing good to them, and I will put the fear of me in their hearts so that they will not turn away from me.
I will rejoice in doing them good, and with all my heart and soul I will faithfully plant them in this land.
For this is what the LORD says: Just as I brought all this great disaster on this people, so I will bring on them all the good I have promised them.
Fields will again be bought in this land of which you say, 'It is a wasteland, without people or animals, handed over to the Chaldeans.'
Fields will be bought with silver, deeds will be written, sealed, and witnessed—in the land of Benjamin, in the places around Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah, in the towns of the hill country, of the western foothills, and of the Negev—for I will restore their fortunes, declares the LORD.
