The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations.
Concerning Egypt, against the army of Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt, which was at Carchemish by the Euphrates River, the army that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah:
Ready the shields, both small and large, and advance for battle!
Harness the horses; mount up, you riders! Take your stand with helmets on; polish the spears, put on the armor!
Why then do I see them terrified, falling back? Their warriors are beaten down; they flee headlong and never turn, for terror is on every side, declares the LORD.
The swift cannot flee, the warrior cannot escape. In the north, by the Euphrates River, they have stumbled and fallen.
Who is this rising like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge?
Egypt rises like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge. He said, "I will rise and cover the land; I will destroy the city and those who live in it."
Charge, you horses! Drive furiously, you chariots! Let the warriors march out—Cush and Put, who carry the shield, and the Ludim, who draw the bow.
But that day belongs to the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, to take revenge on his foes. The sword will devour till it is glutted, till it has drunk its fill of their blood. For the Lord GOD of hosts holds a sacrifice in the land of the north by the Euphrates River.
Go up to Gilead and get balm, virgin daughter of Egypt. But you multiply remedies in vain; there is no healing for you.
The nations have heard of your disgrace; your cry fills the earth. Warrior stumbles over warrior; the two of them have fallen together.
The word that the LORD spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to strike the land of Egypt:
Announce it in Egypt, proclaim it in Migdol, proclaim it in Memphis and Tahpanhes: "Take your stand and get ready, for the sword devours all around you."
Why have your mighty ones been swept away? They could not stand, for the LORD thrust them down.
He made many stumble; they fell over one another. They said, "Get up! Let us go back to our own people, to the land of our birth, away from the ravaging sword."
There they cried: "Pharaoh king of Egypt is nothing but noise; he has let his moment pass."
As surely as I live, declares the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts, one is coming who is like Tabor among the mountains, like Carmel by the sea.
Pack your bags for exile, daughter of Egypt, you who sit secure, for Memphis will become a waste, laid in ruins with no one living there.
Egypt is a beautiful heifer, but a gadfly from the north is coming against her.
Even her hired soldiers in her midst are like fattened calves. They too have turned and fled together; they did not stand, for the day of their ruin has come upon them, the time of their punishment.
Egypt makes a sound like a serpent gliding away, for the enemy advances in force; they come against her with axes, like men who cut down trees.
They will cut down her forest, declares the LORD, dense though it is. For they are more numerous than locusts; they cannot be counted.
The daughter of Egypt is put to shame, handed over to a people from the north.
The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: I am about to punish Amon god of Thebes, and Pharaoh, and Egypt with her gods and her kings—yes, Pharaoh and all who trust in him.
I will hand them over to those who seek their lives, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and his officers. But afterward Egypt will be inhabited as in days gone by, declares the LORD.
But as for you, do not be afraid, my servant Jacob; do not be dismayed, Israel. For I will surely save you from far away, and your offspring from the land of their captivity. Jacob will return and be at rest, secure, with no one to make him afraid.
Do not be afraid, my servant Jacob, declares the LORD, for I am with you. Though I will completely destroy all the nations among which I have scattered you, I will not destroy you completely. I will discipline you with justice, but I will by no means leave you unpunished.
