You then, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust to faithful people who will be capable of teaching others as well.

Take your share of suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs; his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.

And an athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.

The farmer who does the hard work should be the first to receive a share of the crops.

Think over what I am saying, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.

Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David — this is my gospel,

for which I suffer to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained.

So I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.

This saying is trustworthy: If we died with him, we will also live with him;

if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us;

if we are faithless, he remains faithful — for he cannot deny himself.

Keep reminding them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to quarrel about words. It does no good and only ruins those who listen.

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

Avoid godless chatter, for those who indulge in it will only wander further into ungodliness,

and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,

who have missed the truth by saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and they are overturning the faith of some.

Yet God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Let everyone who names the name of the Lord turn away from wickedness."

In a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay — some for honorable use, some for dishonorable.

So if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.

Flee the desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

Have nothing to do with foolish and ignorant controversies; you know they breed quarrels.

And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patient when wronged,

correcting his opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth,

so that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.[^1] [^1]: Or: having been captured by him (the devil), to do God's will. The Greek uses two different pronouns, and the referents are debated.

Hymenaeus and Philetus (v. 17–18) are two false teachers specifically named. Hymenaeus is also mentioned in 1 Timothy 1:20, where Paul says he has handed him and Alexander over to Satan so that they may learn not to blaspheme. Philetus is known only from this text. Their teaching that "the resurrection has already taken place" likely represents an early form of realized eschatology—possibly influenced by Greek philosophical skepticism toward bodily resurrection. They may have spiritualized the resurrection to mean a present spiritual experience (such as in baptism), thereby denying the future, bodily resurrection. This was a serious threat because it undermined Christian hope and could have led to moral indifference.

The chapter uses three illustrations from daily life in the Greco-Roman world to describe the demands and rewards of ministry: the soldier (v. 3–4), the athlete (v. 5), and the farmer (v. 6). The Roman soldier was forbidden to engage in civilian business while on active duty—this was codified in Roman military law. The expression "στρατολογήσαντι" (the one who enlisted him) uses technical military terminology. The athletic term "νομίμως ἀθλήσῃ" (compete according to the rules) refers to the strict regulations of Greek athletic games such as the Olympic Games, where violations of training or competition rules led to disqualification. The farmer illustration reflects the agrarian society's principle that the one who works has first right to the harvest—a principle recognized in both Jewish and Roman law.

Key Terms

"Ὀρθοτομοῦντα τὸν λόγον τῆς ἀληθείας" (v. 15) – "to handle the word of truth correctly" – is a rare expression. The verb "ὀρθοτομέω" literally means "to cut straight" and was used for cutting stones squarely for building or plowing straight furrows. In this context, it refers to presenting the gospel accurately and precisely, in contrast to the distorted message of false teachers.

"Γάγγραινα" (v. 17) – "gangrene" – is a medical term describing tissue that dies and rots, spreading to healthy tissue if not stopped. Greek medical writers such as Hippocrates and Galen used this term. The image emphasizes how destructive and contagious false teaching is.

"Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος" (v. 11) – "this saying is trustworthy" – is a formal formula found only in the Pastoral Epistles. It introduces what follows as an established confession or hymn in the churches. Verses 11b–13 have a rhythmic, poetic structure with parallel lines and may be a fragment from an early Christian baptismal or confessional hymn.

"Σφραγίς" (seal, v. 19) refers to the ancient practice of sealing documents or property with an identifying mark. Cornerstones in temples and public buildings often bore inscriptions identifying the builder or purpose. The two quoted inscriptions—"The Lord knows those who are his" (cf. Numbers 16:5 LXX) and "Everyone who names the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness" – combine God's sovereign knowledge with human responsibility. The image conveys both ownership and security—God knows and protects His own.
