The LORD said to Aaron: "You and your sons and your father's house with you shall bear the guilt connected with the sanctuary, and you and your sons with you shall bear the guilt connected with your priesthood.
Bring your brothers also, the tribe of Levi, your ancestral tribe, to join you and serve you while you and your sons are before the tent of the testimony.
They shall keep your charge and the charge of the whole tent, but they must not come near the holy vessels or the altar, or both they and you will die.
They shall join you and keep the charge of the tent of meeting, doing all the work of the tent, and no outsider shall come near you.
You shall keep the charge of the sanctuary and the charge of the altar, so that wrath may never again fall on the Israelites.
I myself have taken your brothers the Levites from among the Israelites; they are a gift to you, given to the LORD to do the work of the tent of meeting.
But you and your sons with you shall guard your priesthood in everything concerning the altar and inside the curtain, and you shall serve there. I give you the priesthood as a gift of service; any outsider who comes near shall be put to death."
The LORD said to Aaron: "See, I myself have given you charge of the contributions made to me. All the holy gifts of the Israelites I give to you as your anointed portion, and to your sons as a perpetual statute.
This shall be yours from the most holy offerings, from the fire: every offering of theirs—every grain offering, every sin offering, and every guilt offering that they render to me—is most holy for you and your sons.
This also is yours: the contribution of their gifts, all the wave offerings of the Israelites. I give them to you and to your sons and daughters with you as a perpetual statute. Everyone in your household who is clean may eat it.
All the best of the oil, and all the best of the new wine and the grain, the firstfruits that they give to the LORD, I give to you.
The first ripe produce of everything in their land, which they bring to the LORD, shall be yours. Everyone in your household who is clean may eat it.
Every firstborn of the womb, of all flesh, that is offered to the LORD, whether human or animal, shall be yours. But you must redeem the firstborn of a human, and you shall redeem the firstborn of an unclean animal.
Those to be redeemed you shall redeem from one month old, at your valuation of five shekels of silver by the sanctuary shekel, which is twenty gerahs.
But the firstborn of an ox, a sheep, or a goat you shall not redeem; they are holy. You shall dash their blood against the altar and burn their fat as a food offering, a pleasing aroma to the LORD.
All the holy contributions that the Israelites present to the LORD I give to you and to your sons and daughters with you as a perpetual statute. It is an everlasting covenant of salt before the LORD for you and your offspring with you."
The LORD said to Aaron: "You shall have no inheritance in their land, and no share among them. I am your share and your inheritance among the Israelites.
To the Levites I have given every tithe in Israel as an inheritance, in return for the service they perform, the service of the tent of meeting.
From now on the Israelites must not come near the tent of meeting, or they will incur guilt and die.
The Levites alone shall do the work of the tent of meeting, and they shall bear their guilt. This is a perpetual statute throughout your generations: among the Israelites they shall receive no inheritance.
For I have given the Levites as their inheritance the tithe that the Israelites present to the LORD as a contribution. That is why I said to them: Among the Israelites they shall receive no inheritance."
"Speak to the Levites and say to them: When you receive from the Israelites the tithe that I have given you from them as your inheritance, you shall present from it a contribution to the LORD, a tithe of the tithe.
Your contribution will be credited to you as though it were grain from the threshing floor and the fullness of the winepress.
So you also shall present a contribution to the LORD from all the tithes you receive from the Israelites, and from them you shall give the LORD's contribution to Aaron the priest.
From all the gifts you receive you shall present every contribution due to the LORD, taking the holy portion from the very best of it.
Say to them: When you have presented the best of it, it will be credited to the Levites as the yield of the threshing floor and the yield of the winepress.
You and your households may eat it anywhere, for it is your wages in return for your service in the tent of meeting.
You will incur no guilt because of it, once you have presented the best of it. But you must not profane the holy gifts of the Israelites, or you will die."
