The Levitical priests—indeed, the whole tribe of Levi—shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel. They shall eat the offerings made by fire to the LORD and the dues that belong to him.

Levi shall have no inheritance among his brothers; the LORD himself is his inheritance, as he promised him.

This is what the priests are due from the people: from everyone who offers a sacrifice, whether an ox or a sheep, the priest is to be given the shoulder, the two cheeks, and the stomach.

You shall give him the first of your grain, your new wine, and your oil, and the first wool shorn from your flock,

for the LORD your God has chosen him and his sons out of all your tribes to stand and serve in the name of the LORD for all time.

If a Levite comes from any of your towns anywhere in Israel where he has been living, and he comes with all his heart's desire to the place the LORD will choose,

he may serve in the name of the LORD his God like all his fellow Levites who stand there before the LORD.

He shall have an equal share of the food, apart from whatever he receives from the sale of his family property.

When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable practices of the nations there.

Let no one among you be found who makes his son or daughter pass through the fire, who practices divination or interprets omens, who reads signs or works sorcery,

who casts spells, or who consults ghosts or spirits, or seeks answers from the dead.

Anyone who does such things is detestable to the LORD, and it is because of these detestable practices that the LORD your God is driving out these nations before you.

You are to be wholehearted in your loyalty to the LORD your God.

The nations you are about to dispossess listen to those who read signs and practice divination. But you—the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so.

The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your own brothers. You must listen to him.

For this is what you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb, on the day of the assembly, when you said, "Let me not hear the voice of the LORD my God again or see this great fire anymore, or I will die."

And the LORD said to me, "What they have spoken is good.

I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.

And if anyone refuses to listen to my words, which that prophet speaks in my name, I myself will hold him accountable.

But any prophet who presumes to speak in my name something I have not commanded him to say, or who speaks in the name of other gods—that prophet must die."

You may say in your heart, "How can we recognize a word that the LORD has not spoken?"

If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, then that is a word the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; do not be afraid of him.
