Then he brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary, the one facing east, and it was shut.
And the LORD said to me: This gate shall remain shut. It shall not be opened, and no one shall enter through it, for the LORD, the God of Israel, has entered through it. Therefore it shall remain shut.
Only the prince, because he is the prince, may sit in it to eat bread before the LORD. He shall enter by way of the gate's vestibule and go out the same way.
Then he brought me by way of the north gate to the front of the temple. I looked, and there was the glory of the LORD filling the house of the LORD, and I fell on my face.
And the LORD said to me: Son of man, mark well, look with your eyes and listen with your ears to everything I tell you concerning all the statutes of the house of the LORD and all its laws. Mark well the entrance of the temple and all the exits of the sanctuary.
Say to the rebellious house of Israel: This is what the Lord GOD says: Enough of all your abominations, house of Israel!
You brought in foreigners, uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh, to be in my sanctuary, profaning my house, while you offered my food—the fat and the blood. So you broke my covenant with all your abominations.
You did not keep charge of my holy things, but appointed others to keep charge of my sanctuary for you.
This is what the Lord GOD says: No foreigner, uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh, shall enter my sanctuary—none of the foreigners who live among the people of Israel.
But the Levites who went far from me when Israel went astray, wandering from me after their idols, shall bear their guilt.
They shall serve in my sanctuary as guards at the gates of the temple and as servants in the temple. They shall slaughter the burnt offering and the sacrifice for the people, and they shall stand before them to serve them.
Because they served them before their idols and became a stumbling block of guilt to the house of Israel, therefore I have raised my hand against them, declares the Lord GOD, and they shall bear their guilt.
They shall not come near me to serve me as priests, nor come near any of my holy things or the most holy things. They shall bear their disgrace and the abominations they committed.
Yet I will appoint them to keep charge of the temple, to do all its work and everything that must be done in it.
But the Levitical priests, the sons of Zadok, who kept charge of my sanctuary when the people of Israel went astray from me—they shall come near me to serve me. They shall stand before me to offer me the fat and the blood, declares the Lord GOD.
They shall enter my sanctuary, and they shall come near my table to serve me, and they shall keep my charge.
When they enter the gates of the inner court, they shall wear linen garments. No wool shall be on them while they minister at the gates of the inner court and inside.
Linen turbans shall be on their heads and linen undergarments around their waists. They shall not wear anything that makes them sweat.
When they go out to the outer court, to the people, they shall take off the garments in which they ministered and leave them in the holy chambers. They shall put on other garments, so that they do not transmit holiness to the people with their garments.
They shall not shave their heads or let their hair grow long; they shall keep the hair of their heads trimmed.
No priest shall drink wine when he enters the inner court.
They shall not marry a widow or a divorced woman, but only virgins of the offspring of the house of Israel, or a widow who is the widow of a priest.
They shall teach my people the difference between the holy and the common, and show them how to distinguish between the unclean and the clean.
In a dispute they shall serve as judges, and they shall judge it according to my ordinances. They shall keep my laws and my statutes at all my appointed feasts, and they shall keep my Sabbaths holy.
They shall not go near a dead person and defile themselves; only for father or mother, son or daughter, brother or unmarried sister may they defile themselves.
After he has been cleansed, they shall count seven days for him.
And on the day he enters the sanctuary, into the inner court, to minister in the sanctuary, he shall offer his sin offering, declares the Lord GOD.
This shall be their inheritance: I am their inheritance. You shall give them no possession in Israel; I am their possession.
They shall eat the grain offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering, and every devoted thing in Israel shall be theirs.
The best of all the firstfruits of everything, and every contribution of every kind from all your contributions, shall belong to the priests. You shall also give the priest the first of your dough, so that a blessing may rest on your house.
The priests shall not eat anything, bird or animal, that has died of itself or been torn by beasts.
