If someone is found slain, lying in the open field in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess, and no one knows who struck him down,

then your elders and judges shall go out and measure the distance to the towns around the body.

The elders of the town nearest the body shall take a heifer that has never been worked and has never worn a yoke,

and they shall bring the heifer down to a valley with a running stream, where the ground has never been plowed or sown, and there in the valley they shall break the heifer's neck.

Then the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come forward, for the LORD your God has chosen them to serve him and to pronounce blessings in the name of the LORD, and by their word every dispute and every case of assault is to be settled.

And all the elders of the town nearest the body shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley,

and they shall declare: "Our hands did not shed this blood, and our eyes did not see it happen.

Make atonement for your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, O LORD, and do not hold the guilt of innocent blood against your people Israel." And the blood will be atoned for on their behalf.

So you shall purge from among you the guilt of innocent blood, for you will have done what is right in the eyes of the LORD.

When you go out to war against your enemies and the LORD your God hands them over to you and you take captives,

and you see among the captives a beautiful woman and are drawn to her and would take her as your wife,

then you shall bring her into your house. She must shave her head, trim her nails,

and put aside the clothes she was captured in. She shall live in your house and mourn her father and mother a full month. After that you may go to her and be her husband, and she will be your wife.

But if you are not pleased with her, you shall let her go wherever she wishes. You must not sell her for money or treat her as a slave, since you have humiliated her.

If a man has two wives, one loved and the other unloved, and both bear him sons, but the firstborn is the son of the unloved wife,

then when he divides his property among his sons, he may not treat the son of the wife he loves as the firstborn in place of the actual firstborn, the son of the wife he does not love.

He must acknowledge the firstborn, the son of the unloved wife, by giving him a double share of everything he owns, for that son is the firstfruits of his strength; the right of the firstborn belongs to him.

If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey his father and mother and does not listen to them even when they discipline him,

his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his town, to the gate where they gather,

and they shall say to the elders of his town, "This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a glutton and a drunkard."

Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. So you shall purge the evil from among you, and all Israel will hear of it and be afraid.

If a man commits a crime punishable by death and is executed, and you hang his body on a tree,

you must not leave his body hanging on the tree overnight. Be sure to bury him that same day, for anyone who is hanged is under God's curse. Do not defile the land the LORD your God is giving you as your inheritance.
