Now, Israel, listen to the statutes and the ordinances I am teaching you to keep, so that you may live and go in and take possession of the land the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.
Do not add to the word I am commanding you, and do not take away from it, so that you keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you.
You saw with your own eyes what the LORD did at Baal Peor: every man who followed Baal Peor was destroyed by the LORD your God from among you.
But you who hold fast to the LORD your God are all alive today.
See, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, as the LORD my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take as your own.
Keep them and do them, for this is your wisdom and understanding in the sight of the nations. When they hear all these statutes they will say, "Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people."
For what great nation has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us whenever we call on him?
And what great nation has statutes and ordinances as righteous as all this law I am setting before you today?
Only be careful, and guard yourself closely, so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen, and so that they do not slip from your heart as long as you live. Make them known to your children and to your children's children.
Remember the day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, when the LORD said to me, "Assemble the people before me, and I will let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days they live on the earth, and may teach them to their children."
You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain blazed with fire to the heart of the heavens—darkness, cloud, and deep gloom.
Then the LORD spoke to you out of the fire. You heard the sound of words but saw no form; there was only a voice.
He declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to keep—the Ten Commandments—and he wrote them on two tablets of stone.
And at that time the LORD commanded me to teach you statutes and ordinances for you to follow in the land you are crossing over to possess.
Watch yourselves very carefully, since you saw no form on the day the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire,
so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol in any form: the likeness of a male or a female,
the likeness of any animal on the earth or of any winged bird that flies in the sky,
the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground or of any fish in the waters below the earth.
And be careful, when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon, and the stars—all the host of heaven—that you are not drawn away to bow down to them and serve them, things the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under heaven.
But you the LORD took and brought out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be his own people, his inheritance, as you are this day.
The LORD was angry with me because of you, and he swore that I would not cross the Jordan and would not enter the good land the LORD your God is giving you as your inheritance.
For I am going to die in this land; I will not cross the Jordan. But you will cross over and take possession of this good land.
Be careful not to forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and not to make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the LORD your God has forbidden you.
When you have children and grandchildren and have grown old in the land, if you become corrupt and make an idol in any form, doing evil in the sight of the LORD your God and provoking him to anger,
I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you this day that you will quickly perish from the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live long there, but will surely be destroyed.
The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive among the nations to which the LORD will drive you.
There you will serve gods made by human hands, of wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or eat or smell.
But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find him if you search for him with all your heart and with all your soul.
When you are in distress and all these things have come upon you, in the latter days you will return to the LORD your God and listen to his voice.
For the LORD your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers, which he swore to them.
Ask now about the days that are past, the days before your time, from the day God created man on the earth, and from one end of the heavens to the other: has anything as great as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of?
Has any people ever heard the voice of God speaking out of the fire, as you have heard, and lived?
Or has any god ever attempted to come and take for himself a nation out of the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs and wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, as the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?
From heaven he made you hear his voice to discipline you, and on earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words out of the fire.
Because he loved your fathers and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his presence and his great power,
driving out before you nations greater and stronger than you, to bring you in and give you their land as your inheritance, as it is this day.
Know therefore this day, and take it to heart, that the LORD is God in the heavens above and on the earth below; there is no other.
Keep his statutes and his commandments, which I am giving you today, so that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you for all time.
so that anyone who killed another unintentionally, without having hated him beforehand, could flee there—to one of these cities—and live.
They were Bezer in the wilderness, on the plateau, for the Reubenites; Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites.
These are the testimonies, the statutes, and the ordinances that Moses spoke to the Israelites after they came out of Egypt,
east of the Jordan, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, whom Moses and the Israelites defeated after they came out of Egypt.
They took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan—the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan—
from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Gorge as far as Mount Sion, that is, Hermon,[^1] [^1]: Mount Sion here is another name for Mount Hermon in the north; it is not the same as Mount Zion in Jerusalem.
