Then he cried out in my hearing with a loud voice: "Draw near, you executioners of the city, each with his weapon of destruction in his hand!"

And behold, six men came from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each with his weapon for smashing in his hand; and among them was one man clothed in linen, with a writing case at his side. They came in and stood beside the bronze altar.

Now the glory of the God of Israel had risen from above the cherub where it had rested, and moved to the threshold of the temple. And he called to the man clothed in linen, who had the writing case at his side,

and the LORD said to him, "Pass through the city, through Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of those who sigh and groan over all the abominations committed within it."

And to the others he said in my hearing, "Pass through the city after him and strike. Show no pity; spare no one.

Slay them utterly—old men, young men and young women, children and women; but do not touch anyone who bears the mark. Begin at my sanctuary." So they began with the elders who were in front of the temple.

Then he said to them, "Defile the temple and fill the courts with the slain. Go out!" So they went out and struck down people in the city.

While they were striking them down, I was left alone; and I fell on my face and cried out, "Ah, Lord GOD! Will you destroy the entire remnant of Israel as you pour out your wrath on Jerusalem?"

He said to me, "The guilt of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great. The land is full of bloodshed and the city is full of injustice; for they say, 'The LORD has abandoned the land, and the LORD does not see.'

So I too will show no pity; I will not spare. I will bring down on their own heads what they have done."

And behold, the man clothed in linen, with the writing case at his side, brought back word: "I have done just as you commanded me."

Places

The upper gate facing north (v. 2) refers to a specific entrance to the temple complex. This is likely the same gate called "the upper gate of the house of the Lord" in 2 Kings 15:35, built by King Jotham. The fact that the heavenly executioners come from the north carries double significance: North was traditionally the direction from which enemies approached Jerusalem, and in chapter 8 it was precisely at the northern gate that idolatry took place.

The bronze altar (v. 2) was the great burnt offering altar in the outer court of the temple. This altar, originally built by Solomon, was the center of legitimate sacrificial worship. The fact that the six men take their stand at this altar ironically marks where judgment begins—where worship should have occurred; the place meant to bring atonement now becomes the starting point for punishment.

"Tav" (תָּו) in verse 4 is the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet. In ancient Hebrew script (before the exile), tav had the form of an X or +, that is, a cross or mark. Placing this sign on the foreheads of the righteous served as a protective mark, parallel to the blood on the doorposts in Egypt (Exodus 12:7). The term "to mark" (הִתְוִיתָ) is used only here in the Old Testament.

"Badim" (בַּדִּים)—the white linen garment worn by the writing man (vv. 2–3)—was the holy attire of the priests. This places the figure in a heavenly-priestly role, as an intermediary between God and humanity. The fact that he carries "the scribe’s inkhorn" (קֶסֶת הַסֹּפֵר) shows his function as the recorder of the names of the faithful.

Judgment beginning at the sanctuary (v. 6) reflects the principle that responsibility corresponds to closeness to God. The elders before the temple—who should have been the spiritual leaders of the people—are struck first. This principle is also found in 1 Peter 4:17. In ancient Near Eastern thought, the temple was the place of protection above all others; that judgment begins right here overturns all expectations.

Those who "groan and sigh" (הַנֶּאֱנָחִים וְהַנֶּאֱנָקִים) over the abominations represent a faithful remnant in the city. This concept of a preserved remnant amid judgment is central to prophetic theology and offers hope even within the darkest message.
