In the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his horde: Whom are you like in your greatness?
Look at Assyria: a cedar in Lebanon, beautiful in its branches, shading the forest, towering high, its top among the clouds.
The waters made it grow; the deep made it tower high, its rivers flowing around the place where it was planted, sending its streams to every tree of the field.
So it rose higher than all the trees of the field. Its boughs multiplied, its branches spread long, because of the abundant water that fed it.
All the birds of the sky nested in its boughs, all the wild animals gave birth beneath its branches, and all the many nations lived in its shade.
It was beautiful in its greatness, in the length of its limbs, for its roots reached down to abundant water.
The cedars in the garden of God could not rival it, the junipers could not match its boughs, the plane trees were nothing beside its branches. No tree in the garden of God compared with it in beauty.
I made it beautiful with its mass of limbs, and all the trees of Eden, those in the garden of God, envied it.
Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD says: Because it grew so tall, lifting its top among the clouds, and its heart grew proud of its height,
I handed it over to the mightiest of the nations, who dealt with it as its wickedness deserved. I cast it out.
Strangers, the most ruthless of nations, cut it down and left it lying. Its limbs fell on the mountains and in every valley; its branches lay broken in every ravine of the land. All the peoples of the earth went out from its shade and abandoned it.
On its fallen trunk all the birds of the sky settle, and among its branches are all the wild animals.
This happened so that no tree by the waters would grow proud of its height or lift its top among the clouds, and no well-watered tree would rise up against them in its height. For all of them are given over to death, to the earth below, among mortals, with those who go down to the pit.
This is what the Lord GOD says: On the day it went down to the grave, I brought mourning; I covered the deep over it, I held back its rivers, and the abundant waters were stopped. I draped Lebanon in gloom for it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it.
I made the nations shudder at the sound of its fall, when I brought it down to the grave with those who go down to the pit. Then all the trees of Eden were consoled in the earth below—the choicest and best of Lebanon, all the well-watered trees.
They too went down with it to the grave, to those slain by the sword—those who were its strength, who lived in its shade among the nations.
Which of the trees of Eden was your equal in glory and greatness? Yet you will be brought down to the earth below with the trees of Eden; you will lie among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his horde, declares the Lord GOD.
