Then Zophar the Naamathite answered:

"Should such a flood of words go unanswered? Is a man proved right just because he talks?

Should your empty talk silence others? Are you to mock with no one to rebuke you?

You say, 'My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight.'

But oh, that God himself would speak, that he would open his lips against you,

and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom—for sound understanding has two sides. Then you would know that God has overlooked much of your guilt.

Can you fathom the depths of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty?

Higher than the heavens—what can you do? Deeper than the grave—what can you know?

Its measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea.

If he sweeps through and imprisons, if he convenes the court, who can turn him back?

For he knows those who are worthless; he sees their wickedness—should he not take note of it?

But a hollow man will gain understanding about as soon as a wild donkey is born human.

If you would set your heart right and stretch out your hands to him,

if you put away the sin that is in your hand and let no wrongdoing dwell in your tents,

then you could lift up your face without shame; you would stand firm and be unafraid.

You would forget your misery, remembering it like waters that have flowed away.

Your life would be brighter than noon, and darkness would become like morning.

You would rest secure, for there is hope; you would look around and lie down in safety.

You would rest with no one to make you afraid, and many would seek your favor.

But the eyes of the wicked will fail; every escape will be cut off from them, and their hope will be the last gasp of breath."

Zophar the Naamathite (צֹפַר הַנַּעֲמָתִי) speaks for the first time in this chapter. He is the third of Job’s friends to speak in this first round of speeches. The name "Zophar" (צֹפַר) has an uncertain meaning, but may be related to the root צפר, which is connected with birds or dawn. His hometown, Naamah, was likely a city in northwestern Arabia or possibly in the lowlands of Judah. There is a city called Naamah mentioned in Joshua 15:41, but the connection is uncertain. In this chapter, Zophar appears direct and confrontational, with a sharper tone than his friends have shown before.

Events and Customs

Zophar’s description in verses 13–14 of "spreading out your hands" (וּפָרַשְׂתָּ כַּפֶּךָ) reflects a common posture of prayer in the ancient Middle East. Stretching out open hands toward heaven was a gesture expressing both submission and readiness to receive from God. The call to remove "iniquity from your tent" (verse 14) refers to the head of the family’s responsibility in patriarchal culture for the moral purity of the entire household—the tent represented not only the home, but one’s whole sphere of life and household.
