Why does the Almighty not set times for judgment? Why do those who know him never see his days?
Men move boundary stones; they steal flocks and pasture them as their own.
They drive off the orphan's donkey and take the widow's ox as a pledge.
They shove the needy off the road, and the poor of the land are driven into hiding.
Like wild donkeys in the wilderness, the poor go out to their labor, scavenging for food; the wasteland must yield bread for their children.
They gather fodder in the fields and glean the vineyards of the wicked.
They spend the night naked, without clothing, with nothing to cover them in the cold.
Drenched by the mountain rains, they huddle against the rock for want of shelter.
They tear the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge from the poor.
Naked they go about, without clothing; starving, they carry the sheaves.
They press out oil between the terraces; they tread the winepresses, yet go thirsty.
From the city the dying groan, and the throats of the wounded cry out for help—yet God charges no one with wrong.
These are among those who rebel against the light, who do not know its ways or remain in its paths.
At first light the murderer rises to kill the poor and needy, and in the night he prowls like a thief.
The eye of the adulterer watches for dusk, thinking, "No eye will see me," and he keeps his face hidden.
In the darkness they break into houses; by day they shut themselves in—they want nothing to do with the light.
For deep darkness is morning to them all; they are at home with the terrors of the dark.
Yet they are swept away like foam on the water; their portion of the land is cursed, and no one turns toward their vineyards.
As drought and heat snatch away the melted snow, so the grave snatches away those who have sinned.
The womb that bore him forgets him; the worm finds him sweet; he is remembered no more, and wickedness is shattered like a tree.
He preys on the barren woman who bears no child and shows no kindness to the widow.
Yet he drags away the mighty by his power; when he rises up, no one is sure of his life.
He may let them rest in false security, but his eyes are on their ways.
For a little while they are exalted, and then they are gone; they are brought low and gathered up like all the rest, cut off like heads of grain.
If this is not so, who can prove me a liar and reduce my words to nothing?
