But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too small to be counted among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient days.

Therefore he will give them up until the time when she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of his brothers will return to the people of Israel.

He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they will dwell secure, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth.

And he himself will be peace. When Assyria invades our land and treads on our palaces, we will raise against him seven shepherds, eight leaders of men.

They will shepherd the land of Assyria with the sword, the land of Nimrod at its gates. He will deliver us from Assyria when it invades our land and tramples our borders.

Then the remnant of Jacob will be in the midst of many peoples like dew from the LORD, like showers on the grass, which wait for no one and linger for no mortal.

The remnant of Jacob will be among the nations, in the midst of many peoples, like a lion among the beasts of the forest, like a young lion among flocks of sheep, which tramples and tears as it passes through, and no one can rescue.

Your hand will be raised over your foes, and all your enemies will be cut off.

On that day, declares the LORD, I will cut off your horses from among you and destroy your chariots.

I will cut off the cities of your land and tear down all your strongholds.

I will cut off the sorceries from your hand, and you will have no more fortune-tellers.

I will cut off your carved images and your sacred pillars from among you, and you will no longer bow down to the work of your hands.

I will uproot your Asherah poles from among you and demolish your cities.

In anger and wrath I will take vengeance on the nations that have not obeyed.

Places

Bethlehem Ephrathah (v. 1) was a small village about 8 kilometers south of Jerusalem. The epithet "Ephrathah" distinguishes this Bethlehem from another city with the same name in Zebulun (Josh 19:10, 15). The name "Ephrathah" means "fruitful" and was the older name for the region (Gen 35:19; Ruth 4:11). The town was known as David's hometown (1 Sam 16:1-13), and the expression "too little to be among the clans of Judah" refers to the fact that the town was insignificant in the tribe's military and administrative divisions, where "thousand" (אֶלֶף) could mean both a number and a clan or military unit.

The land of Nimrod (v. 5) is a poetic designation for the Assyria/Babylonia region. Nimrod is mentioned in Genesis 10:8-12 as the founder of several cities in Mesopotamia, including Nineveh. The expression "in its gates" refers to the city gate as a symbol of the seat of power, where judicial decisions and trade took place.

Micah's prophecies about Assyria's intrusion into "our land" and "our palaces" (vv. 4-5) reflect this historical threat, which the people experienced or feared during the prophet's time.
