Gather yourselves, gather together, you shameless nation—

before the decree takes effect, before the day blows past like chaff, before the LORD's burning anger comes upon you, before the day of the LORD's wrath overtakes you.

Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land, you who carry out his commands. Seek righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you will find shelter on the day of the LORD's wrath.

For Gaza will be abandoned and Ashkelon left in ruins; Ashdod will be driven out at midday, and Ekron uprooted.

Woe to you who live along the sea, you nation of Cherethites! The word of the LORD is against you, Canaan, land of the Philistines: I will destroy you, and no one will be left.

The land along the sea will become open pasture, with shelters for shepherds and pens for flocks.

The coast will belong to the remnant of the house of Judah; there they will graze their flocks, and in the houses of Ashkelon they will lie down at evening. For the LORD their God will care for them and restore their fortunes.

I have heard the taunts of Moab and the insults of the Ammonites, who mocked my people and boasted against their borders.

Therefore, as surely as I live, declares the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Moab will become like Sodom and the Ammonites like Gomorrah—overrun with nettles, a pit of salt, a wasteland forever. The remnant of my people will plunder them; the survivors of my nation will inherit them.

This is what they get for their pride, because they mocked and boasted against the people of the LORD of hosts.

The LORD will be terrifying to them, for he will make all the gods of the earth waste away. Then the nations on every shore will worship him, each in its own place.

You Cushites too will be slain by my sword.

He will stretch out his hand against the north and destroy Assyria; he will leave Nineveh in ruins, as dry as the desert.

Herds will lie down in her midst, wild creatures of every kind; the owl and the hedgehog will roost on her columns. A cry will echo through the windows, rubble will fill the doorways, for the cedar paneling is stripped bare.

This is the carefree city that lived secure, saying to herself, "I am the one, and there is no other." What a ruin she has become, a lair for wild beasts! All who pass by hiss and shake their fists.

Moab and Ammon to the east were neighboring peoples east of the Jordan with a common origin from Lot according to Genesis 19. Cush in the south denotes today's Sudan/Ethiopia and may also refer to the 25th Egyptian dynasty (Kushite). Assyria and Nineveh in the north represent the great power that had dominated the Middle East for over a century. Nineveh became Assyria's capital under Sennacherib from around 705 B.C.
