The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel—he was indeed the firstborn, but when he defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel, so that he is not enrolled in the genealogy as the firstborn.
For Judah grew strong among his brothers, and a ruler came from him, yet the birthright belonged to Joseph.
The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.
The descendants of Joel: Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son,
Micah his son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son,
Beerah his son, whom Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria carried into exile. He was a chief of the Reubenites.
His kinsmen, by their clans, as they were enrolled in the genealogy of their generations: Jeiel the chief, Zechariah,
and Bela son of Azaz, son of Shema, son of Joel. He lived in Aroer and as far as Nebo and Baal-meon,
and eastward he settled as far as the edge of the wilderness that reaches from the Euphrates River, for their livestock had increased greatly in the land of Gilead.
In the days of Saul they went to war against the Hagrites, who fell by their hand, and they settled in their tents throughout the whole region east of Gilead.
The sons of Gad lived opposite them in the land of Bashan as far as Salecah:
Joel the chief, Shapham the second, then Janai and Shaphat in Bashan.
Their kinsmen, by their fathers' houses, were Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, and Eber—seven in all.
These were the sons of Abihail son of Huri, son of Jaroah, son of Gilead, son of Michael, son of Jeshishai, son of Jahdo, son of Buz;
Ahi son of Abdiel, son of Guni, was head of their fathers' houses.
They lived in Gilead, in Bashan and its villages, and in all the pasturelands of Sharon to their farthest limits.
All of them were enrolled by genealogy in the days of Jotham king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.
The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had valiant men who carried shield and sword and drew the bow, trained for battle: forty-four thousand seven hundred sixty ready for military service.
They waged war against the Hagrites, and against Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab.
They were given help against them, and the Hagrites and all their allies were handed over to them, for they cried out to God in the battle, and he answered their plea because they trusted in him.
They carried off the livestock of the Hagrites: fifty thousand camels, two hundred fifty thousand sheep, two thousand donkeys, and a hundred thousand captives.
Many fell slain, because the battle was God's. And they lived in their place until the exile.
The people of the half-tribe of Manasseh lived in the land from Bashan to Baal-hermon, Senir, and Mount Hermon; they were numerous.
These were the heads of their fathers' houses: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel—mighty warriors, men of renown, heads of their fathers' houses.
But they were unfaithful to the God of their fathers and prostituted themselves to the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them.
So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria and the spirit of Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria, and he carried them away—the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh—bringing them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river Gozan, where they remain to this day.
The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.
The children of Amram: Aaron, Moses, and Miriam. The sons of Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
Eleazar fathered Phinehas, Phinehas fathered Abishua,
Abishua fathered Bukki, Bukki fathered Uzzi,
Uzzi fathered Zerahiah, Zerahiah fathered Meraioth,
Meraioth fathered Amariah, Amariah fathered Ahitub,
Ahitub fathered Zadok, Zadok fathered Ahimaaz,
Ahimaaz fathered Azariah, Azariah fathered Johanan,
and Johanan fathered Azariah—he was the one who served as priest in the house that Solomon built in Jerusalem.
Azariah fathered Amariah, Amariah fathered Ahitub,
Ahitub fathered Zadok, Zadok fathered Shallum,
Shallum fathered Hilkiah, Hilkiah fathered Azariah,
Azariah fathered Seraiah, and Seraiah fathered Jehozadak.
Jehozadak went into exile when the LORD carried Judah and Jerusalem away into exile by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.
