During his reign Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon invaded the land, and Jehoiakim was his vassal for three years. Then he turned and rebelled against him.
The LORD sent raiding bands against him—Chaldeans, Arameans, Moabites, and Ammonites. He sent them against Judah to destroy it, in keeping with the word the LORD had spoken through his servants the prophets.
Surely this came upon Judah at the LORD's command, to remove them from his presence because of the sins of Manasseh and all that he had done,
and also because of the innocent blood he had shed—he had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the LORD was not willing to forgive.
As for the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and all that he did—are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
Jehoiakim rested with his fathers, and his son Jehoiachin became king in his place.
The king of Egypt did not march out from his own land again, for the king of Babylon had taken all that belonged to him, from the Wadi of Egypt to the Euphrates River.
Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother's name was Nehushta daughter of Elnathan, from Jerusalem.
He did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father had done.
At that time the officers of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem and laid siege to the city.
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon himself came against the city while his officers had it under siege.
Jehoiachin king of Judah surrendered to the king of Babylon, along with his mother, his servants, his officials, and his court attendants. The king of Babylon took him captive in the eighth year of his own reign.
He carried off from there all the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the royal palace, and he stripped away all the gold objects that Solomon king of Israel had made for the temple of the LORD—just as the LORD had said.
He carried all Jerusalem into exile: all the officials and all the fighting men, ten thousand captives in all, and every craftsman and metalworker. No one was left except the poorest people of the land.
He deported Jehoiachin to Babylon, along with the king's mother, the king's wives, his court attendants, and the leading men of the land; he led them into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.
The king of Babylon also brought into exile in Babylon all seven thousand fighting men and a thousand craftsmen and metalworkers—all of them strong and fit for war.
The king of Babylon made Mattaniah, Jehoiachin's uncle, king in his place, and changed his name to Zedekiah.
Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. His mother's name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah, from Libnah.
He did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD, just as Jehoiakim had done.
It was because of the LORD's anger that all this happened to Jerusalem and Judah, until he cast them out of his presence. And Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.
