Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, all the heads of the tribes, the leaders of the ancestral houses of the Israelites, to King Solomon in Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the LORD's covenant from the City of David, that is, Zion.

All the men of Israel gathered to King Solomon at the festival in the month of Ethanim, that is, the seventh month.

When all the elders of Israel had come, the priests took up the ark.

They brought up the ark of the LORD, the tent of meeting, and all the holy vessels that were in the tent; the priests and the Levites carried them up.

King Solomon and the whole congregation of Israel, who had assembled before him, were with him in front of the ark, sacrificing sheep and cattle beyond counting or numbering.

Then the priests brought the ark of the LORD's covenant to its place, into the inner sanctuary of the house, the Most Holy Place, beneath the wings of the cherubim.

For the cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark, overshadowing the ark and its poles from above.

The poles were so long that their ends could be seen from the Holy Place in front of the inner sanctuary, though they could not be seen from outside; and they are there to this day.

There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets that Moses had placed there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the Israelites as they came out of the land of Egypt.

When the priests came out of the Holy Place, the cloud filled the house of the LORD,

and the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD.

Then Solomon said: "The LORD has said that he would dwell in thick darkness.

I have surely built you a lofty house, a place for you to dwell forever."

Then the king turned around and blessed the whole assembly of Israel, while the whole assembly of Israel stood.

He said: "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who spoke with his own mouth to my father David and has fulfilled it with his own hand. He said,

'From the day I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel in which to build a house, that my name might be there; but I chose David to be over my people Israel.'

Now it was in the heart of my father David to build a house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.

But the LORD said to my father David, 'Because it was in your heart to build a house for my name, you did well that it was in your heart.

Nevertheless, you shall not build the house; your son, who will come from your own body, he shall build the house for my name.'

The LORD has kept the promise he made: I have succeeded my father David and sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and I have built the house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.

There I have made a place for the ark, which holds the covenant of the LORD that he made with our fathers when he brought them out of the land of Egypt."

Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of the whole assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven.

He said: "LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below, keeping covenant and steadfast love with your servants who walk before you with all their heart.

You have kept what you promised your servant, my father David; with your mouth you spoke it, and with your hand you have fulfilled it, as it is this day.

Now therefore, LORD, God of Israel, keep for your servant, my father David, what you promised him when you said, 'You shall never fail to have a man before me to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your sons watch their way and walk before me as you have walked before me.'

And now, God of Israel, let your word be confirmed, the word you spoke to your servant, my father David.

But will God really dwell on the earth? Look, the heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you—how much less this house that I have built!

Yet turn to the prayer of your servant and to his plea, LORD my God; hear the cry and the prayer that your servant prays before you this day,

that your eyes may be open night and day toward this house, the place of which you said, 'My name shall be there,' to hear the prayer that your servant prays toward this place.

Hear the plea of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray toward this place. Hear from heaven, the place where you dwell; hear and forgive.

When someone wrongs his neighbor and is required to take an oath, and he comes and swears the oath before your altar in this house,

then hear from heaven and act. Judge between your servants: condemn the guilty, bringing his conduct down on his own head, and vindicate the innocent, rewarding him according to his righteousness.

When your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have sinned against you, and they turn back to you, confess your name, and pray and plead with you in this house,

then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them back to the land you gave to their fathers.

When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against you, and they pray toward this place, confess your name, and turn from their sin because you have afflicted them,

then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel; teach them the good way in which they should walk, and send rain on your land, which you gave your people as an inheritance.

If there is famine in the land, or plague, blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers; if an enemy besieges them in any of their cities—whatever the affliction or sickness—

then whatever prayer or plea is made by anyone among all your people Israel, each one knowing the affliction of his own heart and spreading out his hands toward this house,

hear from heaven, the place where you dwell; forgive and act. Deal with everyone according to all that he does, since you know his heart—for you alone know the hearts of all human beings—

so that they may fear you all the days they live in the land you gave to our fathers.

Also concerning the foreigner, who is not of your people Israel but has come from a distant land for the sake of your name—

for they will hear of your great name, your mighty hand, and your outstretched arm—and when such a one comes and prays toward this house,

hear from heaven, the place where you dwell, and do whatever the foreigner asks of you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as your people Israel do, and may know that this house I have built bears your name.

When your people go out to battle against their enemy, wherever you send them, and they pray to the LORD toward the city you have chosen and the house I have built for your name,

then hear from heaven their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause.

When they sin against you—for there is no one who does not sin—and you are angry with them and hand them over to an enemy who takes them captive to a land far off or near,

and if they come to their senses in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead with you in the land of their captors, saying, 'We have sinned, we have done wrong, we have acted wickedly,'

and if they return to you with all their heart and all their soul in the land of the enemies who took them captive, and pray to you toward their land, which you gave to their fathers, toward the city you have chosen and the house I have built for your name,

then hear from heaven, the place where you dwell, their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause.

Forgive your people who have sinned against you, forgive all the transgressions they have committed against you, and grant them compassion in the sight of their captors, so that they will show them mercy;

for they are your people, your inheritance, whom you brought out of Egypt, out of the iron furnace.

May your eyes be open to the plea of your servant and to the plea of your people Israel, and may you listen to them whenever they call to you.

For you set them apart from all the peoples of the earth to be your own inheritance, just as you declared through your servant Moses when you brought our fathers out of Egypt, Sovereign LORD."

When Solomon had finished praying this whole prayer and plea to the LORD, he rose from before the altar of the LORD, where he had been kneeling with his hands spread out toward heaven.

He stood and blessed the whole assembly of Israel in a loud voice, saying:

"Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to his people Israel, just as he promised. Not one word has failed of all the good promises he made through his servant Moses.

May the LORD our God be with us as he was with our fathers; may he never leave us or forsake us.

May he turn our hearts to himself, so that we walk in all his ways and keep the commandments, statutes, and ordinances he gave our fathers.

And may these words of mine, with which I have pleaded before the LORD, be near to the LORD our God day and night, that he may uphold the cause of his servant and the cause of his people Israel, as each day requires,

so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God and there is no other.

And may your hearts be wholly devoted to the LORD our God, to walk in his statutes and keep his commandments, as at this day."

Then the king and all Israel with him offered sacrifices before the LORD.

Solomon offered as fellowship offerings to the LORD twenty-two thousand cattle and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep. So the king and all the Israelites dedicated the house of the LORD.

That same day the king consecrated the middle of the courtyard in front of the house of the LORD, for there he offered the burnt offerings, the grain offerings, and the fat of the fellowship offerings, because the bronze altar before the LORD was too small to hold the burnt offerings, the grain offerings, and the fat of the fellowship offerings.

So at that time Solomon held the festival, and all Israel with him—a vast assembly, from Lebo Hamath to the Wadi of Egypt—before the LORD our God, for seven days and seven days more, fourteen days in all.

On the eighth day he sent the people away. They blessed the king and went to their homes joyful and glad in heart for all the good the LORD had done for his servant David and for his people Israel.

Places

The chapter centers around three important locations. City of David (Zion) was the original Jebusite fortress that David captured (2 Sam 5:6-9), located on the southeastern hill of Jerusalem. Here, the ark of the covenant had been kept in a tent since David's time. The Temple was built on Mount Moriah north of the City of David, an area David had purchased from the Jebusite Araunah (2 Sam 24:18-25). Debir (דְּבִיר), also called "the Most Holy Place" (קֹדֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִׁים), was the innermost room of the temple where the ark was placed under the wings of the cherubim. Archaeological findings from Jerusalem indicate urban development in the 10th century BCE, although the extent of Solomonic architecture remains debated among scholars.

Events and Customs

The month of Ethanim (יֶרַח הָאֵתָנִים) in verse 2 is the seventh month in the Canaanite calendar, corresponding to September-October. This was the time of the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot), one of the three major pilgrimage festivals. The name "Ethanim" means "the ever-flowing [streams]", referring to the few water sources that still flowed after the dry summer. The festival lasted seven days, but Solomon extended the celebration to fourteen days in total (verse 65).

The dedication ceremony followed a pattern known from the ancient Near East. Texts from Mesopotamia describe temple dedications with the "mouth-opening" ritual (mīs pî) for divine statues. Israel's dedication differs markedly from this due to the absence of cult images – it was God's invisible presence, manifested in the cloud (הֶעָנָן), that took up residence in the temple. The cloud that filled the temple (verses 10-11) is called God's "glory" (כְבוֹד יְהוָה) and connects to the dedication of the tabernacle (Exod 40:34-35).

The offerings were extraordinary in scale: 22,000 cattle and 120,000 sheep and goats (verse 63). Such massive offerings at temple dedications are also known from Assyrian kings' inscriptions, such as Ashurnasirpal II's dedication of the palace at Kalhu.

Key Terms

The word זְבֻל (zevul) in verse 13, translated "exalted dwelling", is a rare term also found in Ugaritic texts concerning divine dwellings. It expresses the temple as a heavenly palace on earth.

Cloud of darkness (עֲרָפֶל) in verse 12 refers to the thick darkness where God dwells. This paradoxical image – that light dwells in darkness – expresses God's unapproachability and transcendence, while at the same time choosing to be present in the temple.

The expression "iron furnace" (כּוּר הַבַּרְזֶל) in verse 51 describes Egypt's oppression. The image is drawn from metallurgy where intense heat purifies metal, and was well known in Egyptian context where iron production required extremely high temperatures.

Chapter-Specific Findings

The Tel Dan Stele (8th century BCE) mentions the "House of David", confirming the Davidic dynasty that Solomon's prayer focuses on. Inscriptions from neighboring peoples also show that royal legitimacy was often linked to temple building, just as Solomon's speech highlights the connection between the dynastic promise and the construction of the temple.
