The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD while Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army, along with all the kingdoms of the earth under his rule and all the peoples, were fighting against Jerusalem and all its towns:

This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Go and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah and tell him, Thus says the LORD: I am handing this city over to the king of Babylon, and he will burn it down.

And you will not escape his hand; you will surely be captured and handed over to him. You will see the king of Babylon eye to eye, and he will speak with you face to face, and you will go to Babylon.

Yet hear the word of the LORD, Zedekiah king of Judah. This is what the LORD says concerning you: You will not die by the sword;

you will die in peace. As spices were burned for your fathers, the kings before you, so they will burn spices for you, and they will mourn for you, "Alas, lord!" For I myself have spoken this word, declares the LORD.

So Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words to Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem,

while the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and against the remaining cities of Judah—against Lachish and Azekah, for these were the fortified cities still left in Judah.

The word came to Jeremiah from the LORD after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people in Jerusalem to proclaim liberty for them:

that everyone should set free his Hebrew slaves, male and female, so that no one would hold a fellow Judean in slavery.

All the officials and all the people who had entered into the covenant—that everyone would set free his male and female slaves and no longer hold them in slavery—obeyed and set them free.

But afterward they changed their minds and took back the male and female slaves they had set free, forcing them into slavery again.

Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah from the LORD:

This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I made a covenant with your fathers on the day I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, saying:

At the end of seven years, each of you must set free his Hebrew brother who has sold himself to you. When he has served you six years, you must let him go free. But your fathers did not listen to me or pay attention.

Just now you turned back and did what is right in my eyes: each of you proclaimed liberty to his neighbor, and you made a covenant before me in the house that bears my name.

But then you turned back and profaned my name; each of you took back the male and female slaves you had set free to go where they pleased, and you forced them to become your slaves again.

Therefore this is what the LORD says: You have not obeyed me by proclaiming liberty, each to his brother and to his neighbor. So now I proclaim liberty for you, declares the LORD—liberty to the sword, to plague, and to famine! And I will make you a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.

The men who violated my covenant and did not keep the terms of the covenant they made before me—I will make them like the calf they cut in two and walked between its pieces:

the officials of Judah and of Jerusalem, the court officials, the priests, and all the people of the land who walked between the pieces of the calf.

I will hand them over to their enemies and to those who seek their lives, and their corpses will become food for the birds of the sky and the beasts of the earth.

And Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials I will hand over to their enemies, to those who seek their lives, and to the army of the king of Babylon that has withdrawn from you.

I am about to give the command, declares the LORD, and I will bring them back to this city. They will fight against it, capture it, and burn it down. And I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, with no one living there.

People

Zedekiah (צִדְקִיָּהוּ) was the last king of Judah (597–586 B.C.), installed by Nebuchadnezzar after Jeconiah was taken into exile. His original name was Mattaniah, and he was the son of Josiah, making him Jeconiah’s uncle. The chapter portrays him in a desperate situation during the siege. The freeing of slaves may have been motivated both by religious considerations and practical reasons—freed slaves could be recruited to defend the city. The prophecy confirms that he would "see" the king of Babylon face to face and die in Babylon, which was later fulfilled when he was captured and taken away after his eyes were put out (2 Kings 25:7).

Nebuchadnezzar (נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּר) is referred to here as the leader of a coalition of "all the kingdoms under his dominion." This reflects the structure of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, with vassal states required to contribute troops for military campaigns.

Covenant Making by Walking Between Animal Parts (vv. 18–19) was an ancient ritual element associated with making covenants in the ancient Near East. By walking between the divided pieces of a sacrificial animal, the parties symbolically invoked the same fate upon themselves if they broke the covenant. This custom is also known from Genesis 15, where God makes a covenant with Abraham.
