The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still confined in the courtyard of the guard:

This is what the LORD says, he who made the earth, the LORD who formed it and established it—the LORD is his name:

Call to me, and I will answer you. I will tell you great and hidden things you do not know.

For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says about the houses of this city and the houses of the kings of Judah that are torn down for use against the siege ramps and the sword:

They come to fight the Chaldeans, only to fill these places with the corpses of those I strike down in my anger and my wrath—for I have hidden my face from this city because of all their evil.

Yet I am going to bring it healing and restoration; I will heal my people and reveal to them abundant peace and security.

I will restore the fortunes of Judah and the fortunes of Israel, and I will rebuild them as they were at first.

I will cleanse them of all the guilt of their sin against me, and I will forgive all their sins against me and all their acts of rebellion against me.

Then this city will bring me joyful renown, praise, and honor before all the nations of the earth, when they hear of all the good I do for my people. They will tremble in awe at all the good and all the peace I provide for it.

This is what the LORD says: You say of this place, "It is a wasteland, without people or animals." Yet in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem, now desolate and empty of people, inhabitants, and animals, there will be heard once more

the sound of joy and gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the bride, the voices of those who bring thank offerings to the house of the LORD and sing, "Give thanks to the LORD of hosts, for the LORD is good; his mercy endures forever." For I will restore the fortunes of the land as they were at first, says the LORD.

This is what the LORD of hosts says: In this place, now a wasteland without people or animals, and in all its towns, there will once again be pastures where shepherds rest their flocks.

In the towns of the hill country, the towns of the lowland, and the towns of the Negev; in the land of Benjamin, the villages around Jerusalem, and the towns of Judah, flocks will again pass under the hand of the one who counts them, says the LORD.

The days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will fulfill the gracious promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah.

In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David's line; he will do what is just and right in the land.

In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.

For this is what the LORD says: David will never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel,

nor will the Levitical priests ever lack a man to stand before me continually, offering burnt offerings, presenting grain offerings, and making sacrifices.

The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:

This is what the LORD says: If you could break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night no longer came at their appointed time,

then my covenant with David my servant could also be broken, so that he would have no descendant to reign on his throne, and so could my covenant with the Levitical priests who minister before me.

As countless as the stars of heaven and as measureless as the sand on the seashore, so will I multiply the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me.

The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:

Have you not noticed what these people are saying: "The LORD has rejected the two families he chose"? So they despise my people and no longer regard them as a nation.

This is what the LORD says: As surely as I have established my covenant with day and night and the fixed order of heaven and earth,

so surely I will not reject the descendants of Jacob and David my servant, nor fail to take rulers from his offspring to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes and have compassion on them.
