In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came with his entire army against Jerusalem and laid siege to it.

In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, the city was broken open.

Then all the officers of the king of Babylon came in and took their seats in the Middle Gate: Nergal-sharezer, Samgar-nebo, Sarsechim the chief officer, Nergal-sharezer the chief adviser, and all the rest of the officers of the king of Babylon.

When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled, slipping out of the city by night through the king's garden, by the gate between the two walls, and headed toward the Arabah.

But the Chaldean army pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. They seized him and brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he passed sentence on him.

At Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and he slaughtered all the nobles of Judah as well.

Then he put out Zedekiah's eyes and bound him in bronze shackles to take him to Babylon.

The Chaldeans burned down the king's palace and the houses of the people, and they tore down the walls of Jerusalem.

Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, carried off to Babylon the rest of the people left in the city, along with those who had deserted to him, and the rest of the people who remained.

But Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, left behind in the land of Judah some of the poorest of the people, who owned nothing, and on that day he gave them vineyards and fields.

Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had given orders concerning Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard:

"Take him and look after him. Do him no harm, but do for him whatever he tells you."

So Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, Nebushazban the chief officer, Nergal-sharezer the chief adviser, and all the chief officers of the king of Babylon sent word,

and they had Jeremiah brought from the courtyard of the guard and handed him over to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, to take him home. So he lived among the people.

While Jeremiah was still confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of the LORD came to him:

"Go and say to Ebed-melech the Cushite: This is what the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says: I am about to bring my words against this city—for disaster and not for good—and on that day they will come to pass before your eyes.

But I will rescue you on that day, declares the LORD, and you will not be handed over to the men you dread.

I will surely deliver you; you will not fall by the sword. You will escape with your life, because you have trusted in me, declares the LORD."

People

Nebuchadnezzar (Hebrew: נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּר) was king of Babylon from 605–562 B.C. His name means "Nebo, protect my boundary" in Akkadian. He is very well documented in Babylonian sources, including the Babylonian Chronicles, which confirm his campaigns against Judah.

Zedekiah (צִדְקִיָּהוּ, "The Lord is my righteousness") was the last king of Judah, installed by Nebuchadnezzar in 597 B.C. after the deportation of Jehoiachin. He ruled as a Babylonian vassal but rebelled by seeking Egyptian support.

Nebuzaradan (נְבוּזַרְאֲדָן, "Nebo has given offspring") was the "chief of the guard" (רַב־טַבָּחִים). The title literally means "chief butcher" and represented a high military/administrative rank in the Babylonian court. He received Nebuchadnezzar's special command to protect Jeremiah (verses 11–12).

Nergal-Sharezer (נֵרְגַל שַׂר־אֶצֶר) is mentioned twice in verse 3 and once in verse 13, possibly with different titles. A person by this name is known from Babylonian sources as the son-in-law of Nebuchadnezzar and later king of Babylon (559–556 B.C.) under the name Neriglissar.

Nebushazban (נְבֽוּשַׁזְבָּן) is mentioned in verse 13 with the title רַב־סָרִיס (chief eunuch). He was among the Babylonian officers sent to bring Jeremiah from the guard court.

Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan (גְּדַלְיָהוּ בֶּן־אֲחִיקָם בֶּן־שָׁפָן) came from a prominent family—his father had protected Jeremiah earlier (Jer 26:24), and Shaphan was a scribe under King Josiah. Jeremiah was handed over into his care to be taken "out to the house" (verse 14).

Ebed-Melech (עֶבֶד־מֶלֶךְ הַכּוּשִׁי, "the Cushite, the king's servant") receives a special promise of deliverance from God through Jeremiah in verses 15–18. He had previously rescued Jeremiah from the cistern (chapter 38). The name may be a title rather than a personal name. As a Cushite (from Nubia/Ethiopia), he represents a foreigner who showed greater faith than many in Judah. God's promise to him—that he would "have his life as plunder" (verse 18)—uses the same expression given to Baruch (45:5).

Places

The Middle Gate (שַׁעַר הַתָּוֶךְ) was likely a gate between the northern and southern parts of Jerusalem, possibly near the Tyropoeon Valley. The Babylonian officers stationed themselves there as a symbol of victory and to administer the city's surrender.

The Gate Between the Two Walls and the King's Garden (verse 4) were located at the southern end of the City of David, near the Pool of Siloam. Archaeological excavations have uncovered remains of walls in this area. The route toward the Arabah (Jordan Valley) was a natural escape path eastward.

Riblah in the land of Hamath was Nebuchadnezzar's military headquarters in Syria, strategically located on the Orontes River. From there he could control both his northern and southern realms. It was here that Zedekiah's punishment was carried out.

The plains of Jericho (עַרְבוֹת יְרֵחוֹ) were a flat, open area in the Jordan Valley where escape was difficult. It was there that the Babylonian army caught up with Zedekiah and his entourage.

The Guard Court (חֲצַר הַמַּטָּרָה) was the place where Jeremiah was imprisoned when Jerusalem fell (verses 14–15). From here he was taken out and handed over to Gedaliah.

Events and Customs

Zedekiah's punishment—killing his sons before him and then blinding him—was a calculated cruelty in ancient Near Eastern warfare. The last image the king saw was the extinction of his dynasty. Blinding rebellious vassal kings is documented in Assyrian and Babylonian sources as a way to humiliate and neutralize without executing them. Shackling with bronze chains (נְחֻשְׁתַּיִם) marked royal captivity.

Nebuchadnezzar's command to protect Jeremiah (verses 11–12) is remarkable. The Babylonians must have been aware of the prophet's message urging submission to Babylon. The wording "do him no harm" and "as he speaks to you, so do with him" shows unusual respect for a conquered prophet.

The practice of leaving "the poorest people in the land who had nothing" (הָעָם הַדַּלִּים אֲשֶׁר אֵין־לָהֶם מְאוּמָה) and giving them vineyards and fields (verse 10) was Babylonian policy. By removing the upper class and giving resources to the poor, the Babylonians created a loyal population dependent on them.

Chapter-Specific Findings

Chronology: The chapter gives precise dates—the siege began in Zedekiah's ninth year, tenth month (verse 1), and the city fell in the eleventh year, fourth month, ninth day (verse 2). This corresponds to January 588 B.C. to July 586 B.C., a siege of about 18 months.

Babylonian Chronicles confirm the siege and conquest of Jerusalem. The Lachish Letters, ostraca found in Judah from this period, give a glimpse of the desperation during the Babylonian invasion—one letter mentions that the signal fires from Lachish were no longer visible, indicating that the cities were falling one by one.

Contrast in Destinies: The chapter highlights the contrast between Zedekiah's fate (blinded and led in chains to Babylon) and Jeremiah's fate (protected by royal order), as well as Ebed-Melech's fate (promised deliverance because he trusted in the Lord).
