But now they laugh at me, men younger than I, whose fathers I would have refused to put with the dogs of my flock.

What use to me was the strength of their hands? All their vigor had perished.

Gaunt from want and hunger, they gnawed the parched ground, in the gloom of waste and desolation.

They picked saltwort among the bushes, and the roots of the broom tree were their bread.

They were driven out from among people, shouted at as if they were thieves,

forced to live in dry riverbeds, in holes in the ground and among the rocks.

Among the bushes they brayed; under the nettles they huddled together.

A senseless brood, sons of nobodies, they were whipped out of the land.

And now I am their taunting song; I have become a byword among them.

They loathe me and keep their distance; they do not hold back from spitting in my face.

Because God has loosed my bowstring and afflicted me, they cast off the bridle before me.

On my right the rabble rises up; they trip my feet and throw up their siege ramps against me.

They tear up my path; they further my ruin, and no one need help them.

They come on as through a wide breach; amid the crash they roll in upon me.

Terrors are turned loose against me; my dignity is driven off like the wind, and my deliverance passes by like a cloud.

And now my life is poured out within me; days of affliction have taken hold of me.

Night pierces my bones; the pains that gnaw me never rest.

With great force my garment is disfigured; it binds me tight like the collar of my tunic.

He has thrown me into the mud, and I have become like dust and ashes.

I cry out to you, and you do not answer; I stand before you, and you only look at me.

You have turned cruel toward me; with the strength of your hand you assail me.

You lift me up to the wind and make me ride it; you melt me away in the roar of the storm.

For I know you will bring me down to death, to the house appointed for all the living.

Yet surely no one lays a hand on a man in ruins, when in his disaster he cries for help.

Did I not weep for the one whose days were hard? Was not my soul grieved for the poor?

But when I hoped for good, evil came; when I waited for light, darkness fell.

My insides churn and will not be still; days of affliction confront me.

I go about blackened, but not by the sun; I stand up in the assembly and cry for help.

I have become a brother of jackals, a companion of ostriches.

My skin turns black and peels away, and my bones burn with fever.

My lyre is tuned to mourning, and my flute to the sound of weeping.

Content: Job describes how he is now scorned by young men from society's outcasts—those who lived in caves and ate wild plants (vv. 1-8). They spit on him and attack him without restraint (vv. 9-15). His body is afflicted with disease and pain (vv. 16-19, 30). Most seriously: Job accuses God of having become cruel toward him and not answering his cries (vv. 20-23). Despite Job himself showing compassion to the suffering, he meets only darkness (vv. 25-26).

People

In this chapter, Job describes a group of people who mock him—those who are "younger than I in days" (v. 1). They are described as sons of men whom Job considered so worthless that he would not have placed them with his own shepherd dogs. In the ancient Near Eastern culture, social hierarchy and honor were closely tied to age and lineage. The fact that Job is now mocked by the lowest members of society—the children of "fools" (בְּנֵי־נָבָל) and "nameless ones" (בְּנֵי בְלִי־שֵׁם, v. 8)—represents ultimate social degradation. The term "nameless" meant being without reputation, esteem, or the honor of one's family line.

The chapter mentions several locations that characterize the existence of outcasts: they live in "clefts of the valleys" (בַּעֲרוּץ נְחָלִים), in "holes in the ground and among rocks" (חֹרֵי עָפָר וְכֵפִים, v. 6). These descriptions correspond with archaeological findings of caves and rock dwellings in desert regions around Edom and the Negev, where marginalized groups and outcasts actually lived. The dry wasteland (צִיָּה, v. 3) generally refers to barren, waterless desert areas.

Events and Customs

Spitting at someone (v. 10) was in ancient Near Eastern culture one of the most extreme forms of dishonor and contempt. This custom is mentioned several times in the Old Testament as an expression of total rejection. Likewise, being made a "mocking song" (נְגִינָה) and a "byword" (מִלָּה, v. 9) was a public humiliation that struck at a person's honor throughout society. Job's complaint that his harp has turned to mourning (v. 31) reflects how musical instruments in ancient times were associated with specific occasions—the harp (כִּנּוֹר) and the pipe (עוּגָב) with joy, while now they only accompany weeping.

Key Terms

Several Hebrew expressions in this chapter are rare and difficult. The word "מַלּוּחַ" (malluach, v. 4) refers to saltwort, a bitter-tasting plant that grows in desert areas and was eaten only in extreme need. "רְתָמִים" (retamim) is the broom bush, whose roots were also used as food by the poorest people. The term "כָּלַח" (kelach, v. 2) means vitality or maturity and indicates that these people lacked normal human strength. The expression "dust and ashes" (עָפָר וָאֵפֶר, v. 19) was the traditional bodily posture for mourning and humiliation in ancient Near Eastern culture.
