For the choir director. A psalm of David.

Blessed is the one who cares for the poor; in the day of trouble the LORD will deliver him.

The LORD will guard him and keep him alive; he will be called blessed in the land. You will not hand him over to the craving of his enemies.

The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed; you will restore him from the bed where illness lays him low.

I said, "LORD, have mercy on me; heal my soul, for I have sinned against you."

My enemies say of me in malice: "When will he die, and his name perish?"

When one comes to see me, he speaks empty words while his heart gathers up mischief; then he goes outside and spreads it.

All who hate me whisper together against me; they imagine the worst for me:

"A vile disease has fastened on him; now that he lies down, he will never rise again."

Even my trusted friend, the one who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.

But you, LORD, have mercy on me; raise me up, that I may repay them.

By this I know that you delight in me: my enemy will not shout in triumph over me.

As for me, you have upheld me in my integrity and set me in your presence forever.

Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Amen and amen.

The word "maskil" (מַשְׂכִּיל) in verse 2, a participle form of the verb "sakal" meaning "to understand, to act wisely," denotes more than merely noticing the poor—it implies insightful, practical action. The term "dal" (דָּל) refers to the weak, helpless, or poor, a category of people who stood under special divine protection in Israelite law and ethics.

The expression "debar-beliyya'al" (דְּבַר־בְּלִיַּעַל) in verse 9, often translated as "a deadly disease" or "an evil thing," literally means "a word/cause of Belial"—something destructive and wicked. This expression is otherwise used concerning evil and moral corruption. The enemies claim that the psalmist has been struck by an irreparable curse.

Events and Customs

The psalm reflects a practice where illness was interpreted as possible divine punishment for sin, something the psalmist himself acknowledges as a possibility in verse 5. At the same time, verses 7–8 describe the custom of "visiting the sick"—going to see the ill person—but reveal how such visits could be misused to gather gossip and wait for the sick person's death. The Hebrew expression "to eat someone's bread" (verse 10) was a strong cultural symbol of covenant fellowship and loyalty, making the betrayal by a trusted friend especially serious.

Literary Features
