But now, Job, hear my speech, and listen to all my words.
Look, I have opened my mouth; my tongue forms words on my palate.
My words come from an upright heart; my lips speak sincerely what I know.
The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Answer me, if you can; marshal your case before me and take your stand.
Before God I am just what you are; I too was pinched off from clay.
No dread of me should terrify you; no pressure from me should weigh you down.
Surely you have said in my hearing—I heard the very sound of your words—
"I am pure, without transgression; I am clean, and there is no guilt in me.
Yet he finds occasions against me; he counts me as his enemy.
He puts my feet in the stocks; he watches all my paths."
But in this you are not right, and I will answer you: God is greater than any mortal.
Why do you contend against him, complaining that he gives no account of any of his doings?
For God speaks in one way, and in two, though no one perceives it.
In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber on their beds,
then he opens their ears and seals his instruction upon them,
to turn a person from his deeds and to cut off pride from a man,
to hold his soul back from the pit, his life from perishing by the sword.
A person is also chastened with pain on his bed, with unrelenting aching in his bones,
so that his life loathes bread and his appetite refuses the choicest food.
His flesh wastes away out of sight, and his bones, once hidden, stick out.
His soul draws near to the pit, and his life to the messengers of death.
If there is an angel at his side, a mediator, one out of a thousand, to declare to a man what is right for him,
and he is gracious to him and says, "Spare him from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom"—
then his flesh grows fresher than a child's; he returns to the days of his youth.
He prays to God, and God accepts him; he sees God's face with shouts of joy, for God restores his righteousness to him.
He sings before others and says, "I sinned and perverted what was right, yet it was not repaid to me.
He redeemed my soul from going down to the pit, and my life shall see the light."
Truly, God does all these things, twice, even three times, with a man,
to bring back his soul from the pit, that the light of life may shine on him.
Pay attention, Job; listen to me. Be silent, and I will speak.
If you have anything to say, answer me; speak, for I would gladly declare you right.
If not, then listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.
