I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of his wrath.

He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness, not in light.

Surely against me he turns his hand again and again, all day long.

He has worn away my flesh and my skin; he has broken my bones.

He has built siegeworks against me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship.

He has made me dwell in darkness, like those long dead.

He has walled me in so I cannot escape; he has weighed me down with chains.

Even when I cry out and plead for help, he shuts out my prayer.

He has blocked my ways with hewn stone; he has twisted my paths.

He is a bear lying in wait for me, a lion in hiding.

He turned my paths aside and tore me to pieces; he left me desolate.

He drew his bow and set me up as the target for his arrow.

He drove into my vitals the arrows of his quiver.

I have become the laughingstock of all my people, their taunting song all day long.

He has filled me with bitterness; he has made me drunk with wormwood.

He has broken my teeth with gravel and pressed me down into the ashes.

My soul is deprived of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is.

So I said, "My endurance is gone, and so is my hope from the LORD."

Remember my affliction and my wandering, the wormwood and the gall.

My soul remembers it well and sinks down within me.

Yet this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:

The LORD's acts of mercy never cease; his compassions never come to an end.

They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

"The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "therefore I will hope in him."

The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him.

It is good to wait in silence for the salvation of the LORD.

It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young.

Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD has laid it on him.

Let him put his mouth to the dust; perhaps there is still hope.

Let him offer his cheek to the one who strikes him; let him be filled with disgrace.

For the Lord will not cast off forever.

Though he brings grief, he will show compassion in the abundance of his mercy.

For he does not willingly afflict or grieve anyone.

To crush underfoot all the prisoners of the earth,

to deny a man justice before the face of the Most High,

to rob a man in his lawsuit—does the Lord not see it?

Who can speak and have it happen unless the Lord has commanded it?

Do not both evil and good come from the mouth of the Most High?

Why should anyone alive complain when punished for his own sins?

Let us examine and test our ways, and return to the LORD.

Let us lift up our hearts, along with our hands, to God in heaven.

We have sinned and rebelled, and you have not forgiven.

You wrapped yourself in anger and pursued us; you killed without pity.

You wrapped yourself in a cloud so that no prayer could pass through.

You have made us filth and refuse among the nations.

All our enemies have opened their mouths wide against us.

Terror and the pit have come upon us, devastation and destruction.

Streams of tears flow from my eyes over the ruin of the daughter of my people.

My eyes will flow without ceasing, without relief,

until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees.

What I see brings grief to my soul—the fate of all the daughters of my city.

Those who were my enemies without cause hunted me like a bird.

They tried to end my life in a pit and threw stones at me.

The waters closed over my head, and I thought, "I am cut off."

I called on your name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit.

You heard my voice: do not close your ear to my cry for relief, to my plea for help.

You came near when I called on you; you said, "Do not be afraid."

You took up my case, O Lord; you redeemed my life.

You have seen the wrong done to me, O LORD; judge my cause.

You have seen all their vengeance, all their plots against me.

You have heard their insults, O LORD, all their plots against me—

the lips of my assailants and their muttering against me all day long.

Look at them, sitting and rising: I am the subject of their mocking songs.

Repay them, O LORD, as their hands deserve.

Put a veil over their hearts; let your curse be upon them.

Pursue them in anger and destroy them from under the heavens of the LORD.

Tradition has often identified this voice with the prophet Jeremiah himself, who witnessed both the siege and destruction of Jerusalem. At the same time, "the man" serves as a representative figure for the entire suffering people. This alternation between individual and collective lament (singular in verses 1–39, plural in verses 40–47, then back to singular) was a known literary technique in Old Testament poetry.
