For three years there was no war between Aram and Israel.

But in the third year Jehoshaphat king of Judah came down to the king of Israel.

The king of Israel said to his servants, "You know that Ramoth Gilead belongs to us, yet we do nothing to take it back from the hand of the king of Aram."

So he said to Jehoshaphat, "Will you go with me to fight for Ramoth Gilead?" Jehoshaphat answered the king of Israel, "I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses."

Then Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, "Please seek the word of the LORD first."

So the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred men, and asked them, "Shall I go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I hold back?" They answered, "Go up, and the Lord will give it into the king's hand."

But Jehoshaphat asked, "Is there no prophet of the LORD here besides these, that we may inquire of him?"

The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, "There is still one man through whom we may inquire of the LORD, Micaiah son of Imlah, but I hate him, because he never prophesies anything good about me, only evil." Jehoshaphat said, "The king should not say that."

So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, "Bring Micaiah son of Imlah at once."

Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones, robed in their royal garments, at the threshing floor by the entrance of the gate of Samaria, and all the prophets were prophesying before them.

Zedekiah son of Kenaanah had made iron horns for himself, and he declared, "This is what the LORD says: With these you will gore the Arameans until they are destroyed."

All the other prophets were prophesying the same: "Go up to Ramoth Gilead and you will succeed, for the LORD will give it into the king's hand."

Meanwhile the messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, "Look, the prophets speak with one voice, and it is favorable to the king. Let your word agree with theirs, and speak favorably."

But Micaiah said, "As surely as the LORD lives, I will speak only what the LORD tells me."

When he came to the king, the king asked him, "Micaiah, shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall we hold back?" He answered, "Go up and you will succeed, for the LORD will give it into the king's hand."

The king said to him, "How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the LORD?"

Then Micaiah said, "I saw all Israel scattered over the hills like sheep without a shepherd, and the LORD said, 'These have no master. Let each one go home in peace.'"

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "Didn't I tell you that he never prophesies anything good about me, only evil?"

Micaiah continued, "Then hear the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD seated on his throne, with all the host of heaven standing around him, on his right and on his left.

And the LORD said, 'Who will entice Ahab to go up and fall at Ramoth Gilead?' One suggested this, another that.

Finally a spirit came forward and stood before the LORD and said, 'I will entice him.' 'How?' the LORD asked.

He answered, 'I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets.' The LORD said, 'You will succeed in enticing him. Go and do it.'

So now the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours. The LORD has decreed disaster for you."

Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah came up to Micaiah and struck him on the cheek and demanded, "Which way did the spirit of the LORD go when he left me to speak to you?"

Micaiah answered, "You will find out on the day you go hiding from room to room."

The king of Israel then ordered, "Take Micaiah and hand him over to Amon the governor of the city and to Joash the king's son,

and say, 'This is what the king says: Put this man in prison and give him only meager rations of bread and water until I return safely.'"

Micaiah said, "If you ever return safely, the LORD has not spoken through me." And he added, "Hear this, all you peoples!"

So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead.

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "I will go into battle in disguise, but you wear your royal robes." So the king of Israel disguised himself and went into battle.

Now the king of Aram had ordered his thirty-two chariot commanders, "Do not fight with anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel."

When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought, "Surely this is the king of Israel," and they turned to attack him. But Jehoshaphat cried out,

and when the chariot commanders saw that he was not the king of Israel, they turned back from pursuing him.

But someone drew his bow at random and struck the king of Israel between the sections of his armor. The king said to his charioteer, "Turn around and get me out of the fighting, for I am wounded."

The battle grew fierce that day, and the king was propped up in his chariot facing the Arameans. That evening he died, and the blood from his wound ran onto the floor of the chariot.

As the sun was setting, a cry spread through the army: "Every man to his own city, every man to his own land!"

So the king died and was brought to Samaria, and they buried him there.

They washed the chariot at the pool of Samaria, and the dogs licked up his blood, where the prostitutes bathed—just as the LORD had declared.

The rest of the acts of Ahab, all that he did, the palace he built and inlaid with ivory, and all the cities he built—are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?

So Ahab rested with his fathers, and his son Ahaziah became king in his place.

Jehoshaphat son of Asa became king over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel.

Jehoshaphat was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-five years. His mother's name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi.

He walked in all the ways of his father Asa and did not turn aside from them; he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD.

The high places, however, were not removed; the people still sacrificed and burned incense there.

Jehoshaphat was also at peace with the king of Israel.

The rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, the might he showed and the wars he fought—are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah?

He rid the land of the rest of the male shrine prostitutes who were left from the days of his father Asa.

There was then no king in Edom; a deputy ruled there.

Jehoshaphat built a fleet of trading ships to sail to Ophir for gold, but they never sailed, for the ships were wrecked at Ezion Geber.

At that time Ahaziah son of Ahab said to Jehoshaphat, "Let my men sail with your men," but Jehoshaphat refused.

Then Jehoshaphat rested with his fathers and was buried with them in the city of David his father. And Jehoram his son became king in his place.

Ahaziah son of Ahab became king over Israel in Samaria in the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years.

He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, walking in the ways of his father and his mother and in the ways of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had led Israel into sin.

He served Baal and worshiped him, provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger, just as his father had done.

People

Ahab (אַחְאָב) was the king of Israel who planned to retake Ramoth in Gilead from the Arameans. He ignored Micaiah’s warning, disguised himself in battle, yet was struck by a "random" arrow and died that same evening (verses 34–35). His blood was licked up by dogs at the pool of Samaria, fulfilling the word of YHWH (verse 38).

Jehoshaphat (יְהוֹשָׁפָט, "YHWH judges") was the king of Judah who visited Ahab and agreed to join the campaign against Ramoth in Gilead with the words, "I am as you are; my people as your people; my horses as your horses" (verse 4). He insisted on seeking counsel from a prophet of YHWH (verses 5, 7) and was nearly killed in battle when the enemy mistook him for Ahab (verses 32–33). Verses 41–50 provide a summary of his reign.

Micaiah son of Imlah (מִיכָיְהוּ בֶּן־יִמְלָה) was an independent prophet who stood outside the circle of court prophets. His name means "Who is like YHWH?" Ahab hated him because he never prophesied good concerning the king (verse 8). Micaiah exposed the lying spirit among the court prophets and foretold Ahab’s death (verses 17–23), which led to his imprisonment (verses 26–27).

Zedekiah son of Kenaanah (צִדְקִיָּה בֶן־כְּנַעֲנָה) led the four hundred court prophets. He made iron horns as a symbolic act and prophesied victory: "With these you will gore the Arameans until they are destroyed" (verse 11). When Micaiah exposed the lying spirit, Zedekiah struck him on the cheek (verse 24).

Amon, the city governor, and Joash, the king’s son (verse 26) were ordered to keep Micaiah imprisoned on bread and water until the king returned. "The king’s son" may be an official title rather than a literal royal son.

Ahaziah son of Ahab (verses 40, 52–54) succeeded Ahab as king over Israel and continued in his parents’ evil ways, including Baal worship.

Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat (verse 51) succeeded his father as king over Judah.

Places

Ramoth in Gilead (רָמֹת גִּלְעָד) was the strategically important city east of the Jordan that Ahab sought to retake from the Arameans (verse 3). The city was one of the cities of refuge (Deuteronomy 4:43; Joshua 20:8) and lay on the trade route between Damascus and Arabia. It was here that the battle took place where Ahab received a fatal wound.

Samaria (שֹׁמְרוֹן) was the capital of Israel. At the city gate, kings sat on their thrones and consulted prophets (verse 10). Ahab was brought back and buried there (verse 37), and his chariot was washed at the pool of Samaria where dogs licked up his blood (verse 38).

Ezion-Geber (עֶצְיוֹן גָּבֶר) is mentioned in verse 49 as the place where Jehoshaphat’s ships to Tarshish were destroyed.

Events and Customs

Prophetic consultation before war: Ahab gathered four hundred prophets who unanimously advised going to war (verses 6, 12). Jehoshaphat was not satisfied and asked for a prophet of YHWH (verse 7), which led to Micaiah being summoned. The contrast between the court prophets’ unanimous encouragement and Micaiah’s warning is central to the chapter’s theology.

Iron horns as prophetic symbol (verse 11): Zedekiah’s iron horns were a symbolic act (אוֹת נָבִיא) that visually illustrated the prophesied victory. Horns were a traditional symbol of power in the ancient Near East.

Disguise in battle (verse 30): Ahab’s strategy to disguise himself while Jehoshaphat wore royal robes was intended to mislead the enemy. The irony is that Ahab was still struck by an arrow shot "at random" (לְתֻמּוֹ)—something the text presents as divine judgment.

Imprisonment on meager rations (verse 27): "Bread of distress and water of distress" (לֶחֶם לַחַץ וּמַיִם לַחַץ) describes minimum rations for prisoners.

The king of Aram’s order to attack only the king of Israel (verse 31) with his thirty-two chariot commanders shows a targeted strategy to eliminate the leader. This explains why Jehoshaphat was attacked when he wore royal robes (verse 32).

Fulfillment of prophecy (verse 38): The fact that dogs licked up Ahab’s blood at the pool of Samaria is linked to "the word of YHWH which He had spoken"—likely a reference to Elijah’s prophecy in 1 Kings 21:19.
