King Solomon loved many foreign women. Besides Pharaoh's daughter, there were Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites—
women from the nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, "You shall not intermarry with them, and they shall not intermarry with you, for they will surely turn your hearts after their gods." Yet Solomon clung to them in love.
He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned his heart away.
So it was that when Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was no longer wholly true to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been.
Solomon followed Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, and Milcom, the abomination of the Ammonites.
Solomon did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD; he did not follow the LORD wholeheartedly, as David his father had done.
Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, on the hill facing Jerusalem, and one for Molech, the abomination of the Ammonites.
He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.
The LORD grew angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice
and had commanded him about this very thing, that he should not follow other gods. But Solomon did not keep what the LORD had commanded.
So the LORD said to Solomon, "Since this has been your way, and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant.
Yet for the sake of David your father I will not do it in your lifetime; I will tear it out of the hand of your son.
Still, I will not tear away the whole kingdom. I will give one tribe to your son, for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen."
Then the LORD raised up an adversary against Solomon: Hadad the Edomite, of the royal line of Edom.
Earlier, when David was at war with Edom, Joab the commander of the army had gone up to bury the dead, and he struck down every male in Edom.
Joab and all Israel stayed there six months, until he had killed every male in Edom.
But Hadad fled to Egypt, along with some Edomites who had served his father. Hadad was only a small boy at the time.
They set out from Midian and came to Paran; there they took men with them and went on to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave Hadad a house, provided for his food, and granted him land.
Hadad found such great favor with Pharaoh that Pharaoh gave him in marriage the sister of his own wife, the sister of Queen Tahpenes.
Tahpenes' sister bore him a son, Genubath, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh's palace; and Genubath lived there among Pharaoh's own children.
While Hadad was in Egypt, he heard that David had gone to rest with his fathers and that Joab the commander of the army was dead. So Hadad said to Pharaoh, "Let me go, that I may return to my own country."
Pharaoh said to him, "What have you lacked with me, that now you want to go back to your own country?" "Nothing," Hadad answered, "only let me go."
God also raised up against Solomon another adversary: Rezon son of Eliada, who had fled from his master Hadadezer king of Zobah.
He gathered men around him and became the leader of a raiding band after David struck them down. They went to Damascus, settled there, and made him king in Damascus.
He was an adversary to Israel as long as Solomon lived, adding to the trouble caused by Hadad. He loathed Israel and reigned over Aram.
Jeroboam son of Nebat also rebelled against the king. He was an Ephraimite from Zeredah, and his mother was a widow named Zeruah; he was one of Solomon's officials.
This is how he came to rebel against the king: Solomon had built the Millo and closed the breach in the wall of the city of David his father.
Now Jeroboam was a capable man, and when Solomon saw how well the young man did his work, he put him in charge of all the forced labor of the house of Joseph.
About that time, when Jeroboam was leaving Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah of Shiloh met him on the road. Ahijah was wearing a new cloak, and the two of them were alone out in the open country.
Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing and tore it into twelve pieces.
Then he said to Jeroboam, "Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'See, I am about to tear the kingdom out of Solomon's hand, and I will give you ten tribes.
But one tribe will remain his, for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.
For they have forsaken me and bowed down to Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, to Chemosh the god of Moab, and to Milcom the god of the Ammonites. They have not walked in my ways, doing what is right in my eyes and keeping my statutes and my judgments, as David his father did.
Yet I will not take the whole kingdom out of Solomon's hand; I will let him rule as prince all the days of his life, for the sake of David my servant, whom I chose and who kept my commandments and my statutes.
But I will take the kingship from the hand of his son and give you ten tribes.
To his son I will give one tribe, so that David my servant may always have a lamp before me in Jerusalem, the city I have chosen for myself, to put my name there.
As for you, I will take you, and you will reign over all that your heart desires; you will be king over Israel.
And if you listen to all I command you, and walk in my ways, and do what is right in my eyes by keeping my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did, then I will be with you. I will build you a lasting dynasty, as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you.
I will humble the descendants of David because of this, but not forever.'"
Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, but Jeroboam got up and fled to Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt, and stayed there until Solomon's death.
The rest of the acts of Solomon, all that he did and his wisdom—are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon?
Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel for forty years.
Then Solomon went to rest with his fathers and was buried in the city of David his father, and Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.
