In the last days the mountain of the LORD's house will stand firm as the highest of the mountains, lifted above the hills, and the peoples will stream to it.

Many nations will come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths." For instruction goes out from Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

He will judge between many peoples and settle disputes for strong nations far and wide. They will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation will not lift up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.

Everyone will sit under his own vine and under his own fig tree, and no one will make him afraid, for the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken.

Though all the peoples walk, each in the name of its god, we will walk in the name of the LORD our God forever and ever.

On that day, declares the LORD, I will gather the lame and bring together the scattered, those I have afflicted.

I will make the lame a remnant and the exiled a mighty nation, and the LORD will reign over them on Mount Zion from now on and forever.

And you, watchtower of the flock, stronghold of the daughter of Zion, to you it will come—the former dominion will return, the kingship of the daughter of Jerusalem.

Now why do you cry aloud? Is there no king among you? Has your counselor perished, that anguish grips you like a woman in labor?

Writhe and groan, daughter of Zion, like a woman in labor, for now you must leave the city and camp in the open field. You will go to Babylon; there you will be rescued, there the LORD will redeem you from the hand of your enemies.

Now many nations are gathered against you, saying, "Let her be defiled, and let our eyes gloat over Zion."

But they do not know the thoughts of the LORD; they do not understand his plan, that he has gathered them like sheaves to the threshing floor.

Rise and thresh, daughter of Zion, for I will make your horn iron and your hooves bronze, and you will crush many peoples. You will devote their unjust gain to the LORD, their wealth to the Lord of all the earth.

Now marshal your troops, daughter of troops! A siege is laid against us. With a rod they strike the judge of Israel on the cheek.

Places

The Mountain of the Lord’s House (vv. 1–2): The temple mount in Jerusalem was the religious center of Judah. The expression "in the last days" (be'acharit hajamim) points to a future eschatological time. The idea of a cosmic mountain where God dwells was widespread in the ancient Near East, but Micah reshapes this concept into a vision in which all nations voluntarily seek Yahweh’s instruction.

Migdal-Eder (v. 8): Means "tower of the flock" or "flock’s tower". This was likely a watchtower near Bethlehem, mentioned in Gen 35:21 in connection with Jacob. The Ophel hill ('ofel) in the verse refers to the fortified height in Jerusalem, south of the temple area, and is used here poetically together with "daughter of Zion". These places carry connotations of the Davidic kingdom and shepherd motifs.

Babylon (v. 10): It is remarkable that the prophecy explicitly mentions exile to Babylon, not Assyria, which was the dominant threat in Micah’s time.

Events and Customs

Swords into plowshares and spears into pruning hooks (v. 3): The melting down of weapons into farming tools represents a radical reversal of war economics. In ancient Israel, metalworkers could quickly reshape tools into weapons and vice versa (cf. 1 Sam 13:19–22). The image of sitting under one’s own vine and fig tree (v. 4) was the classic description of peace and prosperity in Israel (1 Kgs 4:25; Zech 3:10).

The Threshing Metaphor (vv. 12–13): Threshing took place by having oxen tread grain on a hard threshing floor. The image of iron horns and bronze hooves alludes to this practice, in which Zion will crush enemies like grain. "Herem" (devoting to the Lord) refers to holy warfare in which spoils are destroyed or dedicated to God.

The Lame and the Outcast (vv. 6–7): The Hebrew hatsole'ah (the lame) and hannidachah (the outcast) describe the people as a wounded flock. The shepherd motif is central—Yahweh gathers his scattered sheep. This expression echoes Ezek 34, where God himself will be shepherd to his people.
