Let love for one another continue.

Do not neglect hospitality, for by it some have entertained angels without knowing it.

Remember those in prison as if you were bound with them, and those who are mistreated, since you yourselves are in the body as well.

Marriage is to be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.

Keep your life free from the love of money, and be content with what you have, for he himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."

So we can say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?"

Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider how their lives turned out, and imitate their faith.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange, unfamiliar teachings. It is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by rules about food, which have never benefited those who follow them.

We have an altar from which those who serve at the tabernacle have no right to eat.

For the high priest carries the blood of the animals into the sanctuary as a sin offering, but their bodies are burned outside the camp.

And so Jesus also suffered outside the gate, to make the people holy through his own blood.

Let us then go out to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore.

For here we have no lasting city, but we are looking for the one that is to come.

So then, through him let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that confess his name.

And do not neglect to do good and to share with others, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work may be a joy and not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.

Pray for us. We are convinced that we have a clear conscience, desiring to live honorably in every way.

And I urge you all the more to pray, so that I may be restored to you soon.

Now may the God of peace, who brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant,

equip you with everything good to do his will, working in us what is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever. Amen.

I urge you, brothers and sisters, bear with this word of encouragement, for I have written to you only briefly.

You should know that our brother Timothy has been released. If he comes soon, I will bring him with me when I see you.

People

Timothy (verse 23) is mentioned as "our brother" who has recently been "released" (ἀπολελυμένον). This is likely the same Timothy who was Paul's close coworker, known from Acts and several letters in the New Testament. The reference to his release suggests he had been imprisoned, confirming that persecution of Christian leaders was a reality during this period. The phrasing also indicates that the letter's author and recipients belonged to the same network of early Christian congregations served by Timothy.

"Those who lead you" (οἱ ἡγούμενοι, verses 7, 17, 24) are mentioned three times in this chapter. The term ἡγούμενοι describes individuals with leadership responsibility within the congregation. In verse 7, reference is made to leaders who have already completed their course of life (ἔκβασιν τῆς ἀναστροφῆς), which may suggest that some of the first congregational leaders suffered martyrdom or died during persecution.

Places

"Outside the gate" (ἔξω τῆς πύλης, verse 12) refers to Jesus' crucifixion outside Jerusalem's city wall. Events and Customs

Hospitality toward strangers (φιλοξενία, verse 2) was a sacred duty in the ancient Mediterranean world. The reference to having "entertained angels without knowing it" connects to the account of Abraham in Genesis 18. For early Christians, hospitality was especially important because traveling preachers and Christians fleeing persecution depended on being welcomed into private homes. There were no public inns that were safe or respectable.

Visiting prisoners (verse 3) was a necessity in antiquity because imprisoned persons were entirely dependent on family and friends for food, clothing, and other necessities. Roman prisons did not provide for the basic needs of prisoners. Visiting imprisoned Christians also involved risk, as one could be associated with the accused.

Offerings outside the camp (verses 11–13) refer to the ritual on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), described in Leviticus 16:27. The bodies of the sin-offering animals whose blood was brought into the Most Holy Place were to be burned outside the camp. The author draws a typological parallel to Jesus' suffering outside Jerusalem.
