So let us leave behind the elementary teaching about Christ and press on toward maturity, not laying again the foundation: repentance from dead works and faith in God,

instruction about baptisms and the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment.

And this we will do, if God permits.

For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift and shared in the Holy Spirit,

who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come,

and who have then fallen away—it is impossible to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and holding him up to contempt.

For land that drinks in the rain that falls on it again and again, and produces a crop useful to those for whom it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God.

But if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close to being cursed, and in the end it will be burned.

Yet even though we speak this way, dear friends, we are convinced of better things concerning you—things that belong to salvation.

For God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown for his name in having served his holy people, and in serving them still.

But we long for each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that your hope may come to full assurance,

so that you will not become sluggish, but will imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,

saying, "I will surely bless you and surely multiply you."

And so, after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.

People swear by someone greater than themselves, and an oath serves as confirmation, putting an end to all dispute.

So when God wanted to show the heirs of the promise even more clearly how unchangeable his purpose was, he guaranteed it with an oath,

so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to him for refuge might have a strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.

This hope we have as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It reaches within, behind the curtain,

where Jesus has entered on our behalf as forerunner, having become a high priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.

People

Abraham (verses 13–15) stands as the central example in the concluding part of the chapter. Abraham was the very founder of the covenant people. The author quotes the account from Genesis 22:16–17 (in verse 14), where God swears by Himself after Abraham demonstrated his willingness to sacrifice Isaac. This reference shows that Christian faith is rooted in the same covenant God made with the patriarch.

Melchizedek (verse 20) is mentioned here as preparation for the detailed treatment in chapter 7. He was the mysterious king of Salem and priest of God Most High who met Abraham (Gen 14:18–20). His priesthood was older than and independent of the Levitical system.

Places

The inner part of the veil (τὸ ἐσώτερον τοῦ καταπετάσματος, verse 19) refers to the Most Holy Place in the tabernacle and later the temple. This was the innermost room where God's presence dwelt, separated from the rest of the sanctuary by a thick veil. Under the old covenant, only the high priest could enter this room, and only once a year on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). The image of Jesus having gone behind this veil communicates that access to God's presence is now permanently opened through Christ.

The agricultural image in verses 7–8, where land that receives rain produces either useful crops or thorns and thistles, alludes to Genesis 3:17–18 and would have been immediately recognizable in an agrarian culture. The practice of burning fields that produced only weeds was well known in antiquity.

Φωτισθέντας (fotisthéntas, "enlightened," verse 4) became early in church history a technical term for baptism. Justin Martyr (ca. AD 150) uses this expression specifically concerning baptism. This likely indicated initiation into the Christian faith through baptism and teaching.

Παραπεσόντας (parapesóntas, "fall away," verse 6) is a strong expression denoting deliberate apostasy, not unintentional sinning. The word suggests falling aside from a path one has been following. In the context of the chapter, it warns against conscious and final abandonment of the faith.

Ἄγκυραν (ánkyran, "anchor," verse 19) was a rich image in antiquity. The anchor was a widespread symbol of hope and stability in Greco-Roman culture and was adopted early by Christians. Archaeological finds from Christian catacombs in Rome show the anchor as one of the earliest Christian symbols, often combined with the cross.

Πρόδρομος (pródromos, "forerunner," verse 20) was a military term for troops sent ahead or a maritime term for a smaller ship sent ahead to port. Applied to Jesus, it emphasizes that He has not only entered God's presence on His own behalf but has gone there to prepare the way for those who follow Him.
