Hear now what the LORD says: Rise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice.

Hear, you mountains, the LORD's accusation, and you enduring foundations of the earth; for the LORD has a case against his people, and with Israel he will contend.

My people, what have I done to you? How have I wearied you? Answer me!

I brought you up out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

My people, remember what Balak king of Moab devised, and how Balaam son of Beor answered him, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the saving deeds of the LORD.

With what shall I come before the LORD, and bow down before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old?

Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

He has told you, O man, what is good, and what the LORD requires of you: only to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

The voice of the LORD cries out to the city—and it is wisdom to fear your name: Heed the rod, and the One who appointed it!

Are there still in the house of the wicked the treasures of wickedness, and the scant measure that is accursed?

Can I acquit anyone who uses dishonest scales, with a bag of false weights?

Her rich men are full of violence, her inhabitants speak lies, and their tongues are deceitful in their mouths.

So I in turn have begun to strike you down, to lay you waste for your sins.

You will eat but not be satisfied; hunger will gnaw within you. You will store up but save nothing, and what you do save I will give to the sword.

You will sow but not reap; you will press olives but not anoint yourself with oil; you will crush grapes but drink no wine.

For you have kept the statutes of Omri and all the practices of the house of Ahab, and you have walked in their counsels. Therefore I will give you over to ruin, and your inhabitants to derision; you will bear the scorn of my people.

The chapter mentions several key figures from Israel’s salvation history. Moses, Aaron, and Miriam (v. 4) formed the leadership triad during the Exodus from Egypt—Moses as lawgiver and prophet, Aaron as high priest, and Miriam as prophetess (Exodus 15:20). The fact that all three are mentioned together is unusual and highlights the breadth of God’s care. Balak, king of Moab, and the prophet Balaam son of Beor (v. 5) refer to the events in Numbers 22–24, where Balak summoned Balaam to curse Israel, but God turned the curse into a blessing. The house of Omri and Ahab (v. 16) represents the most notorious dynasty of the northern kingdom.
