The words of Agur son of Jakeh—an oracle. This is what the man declared to Ithiel, to Ithiel and Ucal:
Surely I am more like a brute than a man; I do not have human understanding.
I have not learned wisdom, nor have I gained knowledge of the Holy One.
Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in the hollow of his hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son's name? Surely you know!
Every word of God is refined; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and expose you as a liar.
Two things I ask of you; do not withhold them from me before I die:
Keep falsehood and lying far from me. Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the bread I need,
or I may have too much and deny you, saying, "Who is the LORD?" Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.
Do not slander a servant to his master, or he will curse you, and you will bear the guilt.
There is a generation that curses its father and refuses to bless its mother.
There is a generation that is pure in its own eyes, yet unwashed of its filth.
There is a generation—how haughty its eyes, how lifted up its glance!
There is a generation whose teeth are swords, whose jaws are knives, devouring the poor from the earth and the needy from among mankind.
The leech has two daughters: "Give!" and "Give!" Three things are never satisfied, four never say, "Enough!":
the grave, the barren womb, land that never has enough water, and fire, which never says, "Enough!"
The eye that mocks a father and scorns obedience to a mother will be picked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the young vultures.
Three things are too wonderful for me, four I cannot understand:
the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship on the open sea, and the way of a man with a young woman.
This is the way of an adulteress: she eats, wipes her mouth, and says, "I have done nothing wrong."
Under three things the earth trembles, under four it cannot bear up:
a servant who becomes king, a fool who is filled with food,
an unloved woman who finally marries, and a maidservant who displaces her mistress.
Four things on earth are small, yet they are wise beyond wisdom:
Ants are a people without strength, yet they store up their food in the summer.
Rock badgers are a people without power, yet they make their home in the crags.
Locusts have no king, yet they advance in ranks together.
A lizard you can catch with your hand, yet it lives in kings' palaces.
Three things move with stately stride, four are splendid in their going:
the lion, mightiest among beasts, who retreats before nothing;
the strutting rooster, the he-goat, and a king at the head of his troops.
If you have been foolish and exalted yourself, or if you have schemed—put your hand over your mouth.
For as churning milk produces butter and twisting the nose produces blood, so stirring up anger produces strife.
