The words of the Preacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem.

Futility of futilities, says the Preacher. Futility of futilities! Everything is futile.

What does anyone gain from all the labor he toils at under the sun?

One generation goes, another comes, but the earth stands forever.

The sun rises and the sun sets, then pants back to the place where it rises again.

The wind blows south, then turns north; round and round it goes, and back again to where it started.

All the rivers run to the sea, yet the sea is never full; to the place where the rivers flow, there they return to flow again.

All things are wearisome; no one can put it into words. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing.

What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done; there is nothing new under the sun.

Is there something of which people say, "Look, this is new"? It was here long ago, in the ages before us.

No one remembers those who came first, and even those who are yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow them.

I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

I set my mind to search out and examine with wisdom everything done under heaven. It is a miserable task that God has given the children of Adam to occupy themselves with.

I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and it is all futile, a chasing after the wind.

What is crooked cannot be straightened, and what is missing cannot be counted. Footnote: Literally "a lack cannot be numbered" — what is not there cannot be added to the count.

I said to myself: Look, I have grown great and gained more wisdom than anyone who ruled Jerusalem before me; my mind has taken in much wisdom and knowledge.

So I set my mind to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly as well. And I came to know that this too is a chasing after the wind.

For with much wisdom comes much grief, and the more knowledge, the more sorrow.
