The LORD said to Moses, "Say to Aaron: Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, the canals, and the pools, and bring up the frogs upon the land of Egypt."

So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt.

But the magicians did the same by their secret arts and brought up frogs upon the land of Egypt.

Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Plead with the LORD to take the frogs away from me and my people, and I will let the people go to sacrifice to the LORD."

Moses said to Pharaoh, "The honor is yours: name the time when I am to plead for you, your servants, and your people, that the frogs may be cut off from you and your houses and remain only in the Nile."

"Tomorrow," he said. Moses replied, "As you say—so that you may know that there is no one like the LORD our God.

The frogs will leave you and your houses, your servants and your people; they will remain only in the Nile."

Then Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and Moses cried to the LORD about the frogs he had brought upon Pharaoh.

The LORD did as Moses asked, and the frogs died in the houses, the courtyards, and the fields.

They piled them up in heap after heap, and the land reeked.

But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and would not listen to them, just as the LORD had said.

Then the LORD said to Moses, "Say to Aaron: Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, and it will become gnats throughout all the land of Egypt."

They did so. Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff and struck the dust of the earth, and gnats came upon man and beast. All the dust of the earth became gnats throughout all the land of Egypt.

The magicians did the same by their secret arts, trying to produce gnats, but they could not. And the gnats were on man and beast.

Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God." But Pharaoh's heart remained hard, and he would not listen to them, just as the LORD had said.

Then the LORD said to Moses, "Rise early in the morning and present yourself before Pharaoh as he goes out to the water, and say to him: Thus says the LORD: Let my people go, that they may serve me.

For if you will not let my people go, I will send swarms of flies upon you and your servants, upon your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies, and even the ground where they stand.[^1] [^1]: The Hebrew word means simply "swarm"; the kind of insect is not specified.

But on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where my people live; no swarms of flies will be there, so that you may know that I am the LORD in the midst of the land.

I will make a distinction between my people and your people. Tomorrow this sign will take place."

And the LORD did so. Dense swarms of flies came into the house of Pharaoh and the houses of his servants; throughout all the land of Egypt the land was ruined because of the flies.

Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Go, sacrifice to your God here in the land."

But Moses said, "That would not be right, for what we sacrifice to the LORD our God is detestable to the Egyptians. If we offer sacrifices detestable to the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not stone us?

We must go a three days' journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God, as he commands us."

Pharaoh said, "I will let you go to sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness—only you must not go very far. Now plead for me."

Moses said, "As soon as I leave you, I will plead with the LORD, and tomorrow the flies will depart from Pharaoh, his servants, and his people. Only let Pharaoh not deal falsely again by refusing to let the people go to sacrifice to the LORD."

Then Moses went out from Pharaoh and pleaded with the LORD.

And the LORD did as Moses asked: he removed the flies from Pharaoh, his servants, and his people; not one remained.

But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also and would not let the people go.
