In the first year of Darius son of Xerxes, a Mede by descent, who was made king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans—
in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the books the number of years that must pass before the desolations of Jerusalem would be completed—seventy years, as the word of the LORD had come to Jeremiah the prophet.
So I turned my face to the Lord God, to seek him in prayer and pleading, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.
I prayed to the LORD my God and made confession: "Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps the covenant and mercy for those who love him and keep his commandments,
we have sinned and done wrong. We have acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and your rulings.
We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, our fathers, and all the people of the land.
Righteousness belongs to you, Lord, but to us shame of face—to this very day—to the people of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, near and far, in every land where you have driven them because of the treachery they committed against you.
LORD, to us belongs shame of face—to our kings, our princes, and our fathers—because we have sinned against you.
To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, though we have rebelled against him,
and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God by walking in his laws, which he set before us through his servants the prophets.
All Israel has transgressed your law and turned aside, refusing to obey your voice. So the curse and the oath written in the law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out upon us, because we have sinned against him.
He has carried out the word he spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, bringing on us so great a disaster that nothing like what has been done to Jerusalem has ever been done under all heaven.
Just as it is written in the law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us. Yet we did not entreat the favor of the LORD our God by turning from our iniquity and gaining insight into your truth.
So the LORD kept the disaster ready and brought it upon us, for the LORD our God is righteous in everything he does; but we have not obeyed his voice.
And now, Lord our God, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and made a name for yourself that endures to this day: we have sinned, we have done wrong.
Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, let your anger and your wrath turn away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain. Because of our sins and the guilt of our fathers, Jerusalem and your people have become an object of scorn to all who surround us.
Now therefore, our God, hear the prayer and the pleading of your servant. For your own sake, Lord, let your face shine upon your desolate sanctuary.
Incline your ear, my God, and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolation and the city that bears your name. We do not lay our pleas before you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy.
Lord, hear! Lord, forgive! Lord, listen and act! For your own sake, my God, do not delay, for your city and your people bear your name."
While I was still speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and laying my plea before the LORD my God for his holy mountain—
while I was still speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight at the time of the evening sacrifice.
He instructed me and said, "Daniel, I have come now to give you insight and understanding.
As soon as you began to pray, a word went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly loved. So consider the word and understand the vision.
Seventy weeks are decreed for your people and your holy city: to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for guilt, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint a most holy place.
Know this and understand: from the going out of the word to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until an anointed one, a prince, there will be seven weeks; then for sixty-two weeks it will be rebuilt with streets and moat, but in times of distress.
After the sixty-two weeks an anointed one will be cut off and have nothing. The people of a prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end will come like a flood, and until the end there will be war; desolations are decreed.
He will confirm a covenant with many for one week; and in the middle of the week he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. On the wing of the temple will be abominations that bring desolation, until the decreed destruction is poured out on the desolator."
