Jesus' great discourse on the destruction of Jerusalem and his return.

1Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to point out to him the temple buildings.

2But he answered them, "Do you see all this? I tell you the truth: not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be torn down."

3As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately and said, "Tell us, when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"

4Jesus answered them, "See to it that no one leads you astray.

5For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and they will lead many astray.

6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see that you are not alarmed. This must happen, but the end is not yet.

7For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.

8All these are only the beginning of the birth pains.

9"Then they will hand you over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of my name.

10Then many will fall away, and they will betray one another and hate one another.

11Many false prophets will arise and lead many astray.

12And because lawlessness will increase, the love of most people will grow cold.

13But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

14And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

15"So when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place—let the reader understand—

16then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

17Whoever is on the roof must not go down to get anything out of the house,

18and whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak.

19How terrible it will be in those days for women who are pregnant or nursing!

20Pray that your flight will not be in winter or on a Sabbath.

21For then there will be great distress, such as has not happened from the beginning of the world until now, and never will again.

22If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive; but for the sake of the elect they will be cut short.

23"At that time, if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'There he is!'—do not believe it.

24For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

25See, I have told you beforehand.

26So if they say to you, 'Look, he is in the wilderness,' do not go out; or, 'Look, he is in the inner rooms,' do not believe it.

27For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

28Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

29"Immediately after the distress of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

30Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

31And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

32"Learn this lesson from the fig tree: as soon as its branch grows tender and puts out leaves, you know that summer is near.

33So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, right at the door.

34I tell you the truth: this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.

35Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

36"But about that day and hour no one knows—not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

37As it was in the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

38For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and being given in marriage, right up to the day Noah entered the ark;

39and they knew nothing about it until the flood came and swept them all away. So will it be at the coming of the Son of Man.

40Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.

41Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and the other left.

42So stay awake, because you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.

43But understand this: if the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into.

44So you too must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect.

45"Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household to give the others their food at the proper time?

46Blessed is that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns.

47I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.

48But suppose that wicked servant says to himself, 'My master is staying away a long time,'

49and he begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.

50The master of that servant will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not know.

51He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites. There, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

1As he was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Teacher, look! What magnificent stones, what magnificent buildings!"

2Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."

3As he sat on the Mount of Olives facing the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately,

4"Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that all of them are about to be fulfilled?"

5Jesus began to say to them, "See that no one leads you astray.

6Many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he,' and they will lead many astray.

7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.

8Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of the birth pains.

9But you must watch out for yourselves. You will be handed over to councils and flogged in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, as a testimony to them.

10And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations.

11When they arrest you and bring you to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Say whatever is given to you in that hour, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

12Brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise against their parents and have them put to death.

13You will be hated by everyone because of my name, but the one who endures to the end will be saved.

14"When you see the abomination of desolation standing where it should not be—let the reader understand—then those in Judea must flee to the mountains.

15No one on the roof should go down or enter the house to take anything out.

16And no one in the field should turn back to get his cloak.

17How dreadful it will be in those days for women who are pregnant or nursing!

18Pray that it will not happen in winter,

19because those days will bring such distress as has not occurred from the beginning of the creation that God made until now—and never will again.

20If the Lord had not cut those days short, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them.

21At that time, if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Messiah!' or, 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it.

22For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to lead the elect astray, if that were possible.

23So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time.

24"But in those days, after that distress, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light;

25the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

26Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.

27And he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.

28"Learn this lesson from the fig tree: as soon as its branch grows tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near.

29In the same way, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near—right at the door.

30Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have happened.

31Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

32"But about that day or hour no one knows—not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

33Be on guard! Stay awake! For you do not know when the time will come.

34It is like a man going away on a journey: he leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his own task, and he tells the one at the door to keep watch.

35So keep watch, because you do not know when the master of the house will come—whether in the evening, at midnight, when the rooster crows, or at dawn.

36Otherwise he may come suddenly and find you asleep.

37What I say to you, I say to everyone: Keep watch!"

5As some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, he said,

6"As for what you see here, the days will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."

7They asked him, "Teacher, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?"

8He said, "Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them.

9When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be terrified. These things must happen first, but the end will not come at once."

10Then he said to them: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

11There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues, and there will be terrifying sights and great signs from heaven.

12But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name.

13This will give you an opportunity to bear witness.

14So make up your minds not to prepare your defense beforehand,

15for I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.

16You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death.

17Everyone will hate you because of my name.

18Yet not a hair of your head will perish.

19By your endurance, gain your lives.

20"When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near.

21Then let those in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the countryside not enter it,

22for these are days of vengeance, when all that is written will be fulfilled.

23How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! For there will be great distress on the land and wrath against this people.

24They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

25"There will be signs in the sun, the moon and the stars, and on the earth nations will be in anguish, bewildered by the roaring and surging of the sea.

26People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

27Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

28When these things begin to happen, stand up and lift your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."

29He told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees.

30As soon as they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near.

31So also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.

32Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place.

33Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

34"Be on your guard, so that your hearts are not weighed down by carousing and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and so that day does not come upon you suddenly, like a trap.

35For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth.

36Stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all that is about to happen, and to stand before the Son of Man."

Looking up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury.
He also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins,
and he said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them.
For they all gave their gifts out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."

Each day he was teaching in the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives.
And all the people came early in the morning to hear him in the temple.
